A new version of CTI was released last Friday: CTI ver. 1.2. 'Generate and Download' is the key feature in this releases, so everyone can download (or generate) target files.

Info about this version is available at CTI blog: http://blogs.sun.com/cti/entry/new_version_of_cti_v1

For those who don't know yet what is CTI, it stand for Community Translation Interface. It is a tool that allow contributers to easily translate Open Sourced products files. We used in JavaES world already for OpenDS, OpenSSO and lately with GlassFish for the V3 Beta.

Here are some fresh news regarding Sun acquisition by Oracle:

The European Commission has decided to seek more information regarding Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems by conducting a Phase Two inquiry. The U.S. Department of Justice approved Oracle's proposed acquisition of Sun Microsystems without conditions and terminated the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act on August 20, 2009. Sun's stockholders approved the transaction on July 16, 2009. Closing of the transaction is subject to certain conditions, including clearance by the European Commission.

Which is the format German use for dates ? dd MMMM ? No I meant the long date format for Spanish.... And what about the French one !? And are the month name starting with an uppercase letter in Spanish ?

All those little questions can quickly become problematic to answer since there are always some little differences between the languages.

I found this page very helpful: http://www.sql-und-xml.de/server-daten/culture-info/

It is in German, but even for non-German speakers it is quite east to understand. The list of languages is really complete, and there is a lot of information. On little minus, not always the same info is shown for different languages... But that's only a little drawback comparing to how helpful it can be !!!

So to our answer our questions:
- German format for dates: dd.MM.yyyy
- Spanish format for long dates: dddd, dd' de 'MMMM' de 'yyyy
- French format for long dates: dddd d MMMM yyyy
- Spanish month names: lowercase (enero, febrero, marzo, abril, mayo, junio, julio, agosto, septiembre, octubre, noviembre, diciembre)

Easy hum ? :)

The title is quite self-explaining ! KDE is now available on OpenSolaris thanks the hard work of Pavel (you know him from this blog), and Honza Hnatek. More details on http://www.genunix.org/,  from Thur Aug 06 2009:

KDE on OpenSolaris has always been popular - but Suns' decision to go with Gnome left the KDE community to fend for themselves - which they have done with aplomb! :) Today we are pleased to support the OpenSolaris K Desktop Environment Project and make available the Korona live DVD distribution, based on OpenSolaris 2009.06, which boots right into KDE version 4.3 RC3. tryit After downloading, please verify the checksums. Project Korona details are available here. Many thanks to Pavel Heimlich (aka hajma) for his help with getting this content to Genunix.Org!
Please provide your feedback to the project authors. Remember - it's always nice to get a "Thank You" from a stranger.

Often when dealing with long commands and having resized the window of konsole or gnome-terminal, the line was not wrapped correctly and I was writing over the previously typed characters. Usually resizing the terminal back to default size helped so I was not really pushed into finding the culprit. But today I got really upset and spent five minutes googling around :-)

And it appears this is a bug/feature of bash itself. In short, when setting the shell prompt, bash can count some non-printing characters into the length of line text. It can be easily cured by adjusting the .bashrc file, as explained in the fine documentation.

Do you use OpenDS, Glassfish, Directory Server Enterprise Edition or other Java applications on german, french or spanish Microsoft Windows and see the accentuated characters like ùûüÿàâäçéèêëïîñóôöœßÙÛÜŸÄÀÂÇÉÈÊËÏÎŒÑÖÓÔ garbled in the command line interface? Here's why and how to fix it:[Read More]

Today I did quite a lot of work on my Solaris 10u7 Virtual Image. I wanted to be safe and use the screenshot functionality to save it.

I already had a screenshot done, so I just did another one:

VBoxManage snapshot JesSol10u7 take test02 -desc "this is the 2nd screenshot, testing purposes"

OK good. I then wanted to try out and see the if the screenshot worked well by restoring it: few modification on the image -> Google, "VBoxManage snapshots restore select" => http://linux.com/news/enterprise/systems-management/8224-secrets-for-controlling-virtualbox-from-the-command-line

There I found what I wanted: "With a stable snapshot in hand, go ahead and play with the system. If you get in trouble and your machine won't boot or starts behaving abnormally, you can revert to the snapshot of the stable machine. To do this, first power off the VM with VBoxManage controlvm "Fedora" poweroff, then revert to last snapshot with VBoxManage snapshot "Fedora" discardcurrent -state. If you have multiple snapshots, you can revert to the last but one snapshot with the -all switch instead of -state."

Ohh, what is this "-all" option ? Going back not to the last screenshot but to the pre-last one ? Interesting... OK ! Let's give it a try, restore the 1st screenshot, and then I'll restore the 2nd one...

VBoxManage snapshot JesSol10u7 discardcurrent -all

Wrong ! At least wrong for what I wanted to do: the 1st screenshot got well restore, but the 2nd one disappeared !! Oh no, all the work I specifically saved lost ! Grrrrr...

Well, that's it, those VirtualBox screenshots do not save the state of the machine at some point, but the differences between two states. The advantage is that screenshots take less place, but you the different screenshots becomes inter-related... If you "go back" of 2 screenshots, you can not go back anymore to the screenshot you skipped... At least that's what I understood.

So just be aware of it when you're using the "-all" option !

Skype-like systems are definitely important nowadays. The problem is that is is generally very well spread on Windows, but much less on other OS, like Solaris for example.  If you are interested in, I encourage you to check this out:

https://imo.im

I've tried it and it worked. I can not say it worked as nicely as Skype on windows, but still, it was somewho not too bad.

For those who are more will to get their hands dirty, there is always Sailfin, a communication oriented version of GlassFish ! :)
Set your own server, link it with your own tools, I did not try it myself but I can say I've seen nice demos !
