Fortunately you are now reading this blog entry that will save you from relogging to your precious server! Here's the trick that should be tried as first one:
To compose the ^O, do "Ctrl+v" "Ctrl+o".
To give credits where it's due - I found that in an old entry in comp.unix.solaris
cat a binary and now your terminal prompt shows squares and weird characters. When you type anything , it's shown as incomprehensible mess. Typing "reset" nor any of the tricks found during the first minute of googling don't work and you are one step away from closing the terminal.Fortunately you are now reading this blog entry that will save you from relogging to your precious server! As with any issue, prevention is the essence.
So when not sure, if binary or not, use
<p><i>vi</i> instead of <i>cat</i></p>
<p>before viewing, use command <i>file <somefile></i> to find out type of file</p>
Than again, we all were at some point 100% sure, and went Oops..

And do you know anything as well how to restore a shell that has its prompt corrupted, i.e. the prompt is display over two lines, but it is all messed up and you don't really see what you type (there is an offset between your input and what/how it is dispalyed) ? I you know what I mean.... :) (not easy to explain...)
