I recently was tasked with a new project -- to work on awareness and training around some technologies that help students learn the Java programming language. The projects are Alice.org, BlueJ, and Greenfoot. I've been spending several hours for the past few weeks trying to learn more about these technologies. I had fun using these tools to learn more about Java! I have learned to program a skater in Alice and worked on a maze in Greenfoot.  Students who use these tools find them fun as well!  Here's a blog entry from a college student who has been using Alice 3 in her programming classes.  I'm looking forward to learning more about these technologies and sharing them with others.

Last year I wrote a blog entry in memory of those that lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01. I received a comment about whether 9/11 really occurred or was a massive conspiracy and than another comment about the lives that have in the resulting wars and conflicts.

To me 9/11 is very real. Seven years ago today, nineteen individuals hijacked four airplanes and turned them into weapons and killed thousands of people. Over three thousand died that day in the attacks, and yes, thousands and thousands more have died since in wars and violence in the name of justice or retaliation; depending on your prospective. I do not really think really matters whether you are angry about the terrorist attacks or the wars -- the loss of life that has resulted is tragic.

I, for one, am angry about the attacks. At the time they occurred I was a Boeing 757 & 767 pilot for American Airlines flying out of Boston. These attacks hit very close to home. My friends were killed and my life changed forever. Thinking about the events still brings me great sadness. May their lives never be forgotten.

When I first began at Sun I worked on eco.  Now, over a year later I have the opportunity to work on eco again.  I am am very excited to see that OpenEco.org (the online community we launched last September) is still growing!  Today the community has over 2050 registered users and 580 registered organizations.  I am excited to see the community to continue to grow in the future!

If you are not already a member of OpenEco -- check it out today! I use the tool to track the energy usage of my home office.

I am not a good sick person in general.  I do not like being sick; and when I do get ill I want to get better right away and am not patient at all. The past few days I was sick -- and on a weekend no less! The weather this weekend was beautiful -- sunny & warm -- and I was stuck inside with a fever. Luckily, I have recovered quickly and am back to work. Lots to do! Too bad most of the lovely weekend was spent resting -- are so many fun things I could have done. Oh well! There is always next week...

This afternoon I had an opportunity to attend by Jeremiah Owyang about social media. He brought up some interesting facts about how people use social media; and added some ideas about where this area is headed. Since I did not get a chance to read his blog beforehand, I looked it up as soon as I got home. His blog, Web Strategy by Jeremiah, is a wealth of information and ideas about web strategy!  Lots of great reading!

I dressed up for work today. Not quite sure why, I just felt like it. True I often work from home -- actually I work from home as much as possible -- so going to the office is an event! But, also, today I just felt like dressing up, putting girl clothes on. And by doing so, I realized I should do this more often; I feel great!

And speaking of writing that is fun, I recently began another blog about one of my passions -- travel! Here's the link:

http://www.travelpod.com/members/jessica_orquina

In this blog I will focus on travel and cultural experiences -- both near and far. Please check it out!

When I originally began this blog about a year ago I decided my blog must have a theme and all entries should be thought provoking. I included a few fun topics from time to time, but in general decided to stick to "stuff that was worth writing". This lead to blog neglect; which probably less interesting reading in the long run. So, from now on this blog is going to be whatever I want to write about.

So, what are my interesting? I enjoy travel, photography, food, wine, family, friends, and reading. I enjoy the beautiful city where I live, San Francisco. I enjoy learning new things and experiencing different cultures. And I like to write, regardless of the topic! Actually, I think I enjoy writing less when I limit my expression. So, from now on I'm going to just write what is fun here!

I cannot believe it's already June again! Last year at this time I had just begun my internship at Sun. My personal life was also changing for the better too. For me, last spring was a time of new beginnings, new experiences. In addition, last spring was the first time I did not try to control my life -- I just let it happen, no unfold, in front of me. The result was a combination of experiences and situations (both permanent & passing) that far exceeded my expections.

So, what's the point of the above paragraph? No point really -- just my way of giving thanks. Giving thanks for the experience I have had the opportunity to have. Giving thanks for where I am today. And lastly, giving thanks to myself for trusting the universe and letting my life unfold.

Okay -- enough deep thoughts -- at least for tonight!

Yes, I have neglected this blog quite a bit over the past several months. Between work, finishing grad school, and putting updates on the Sun in Virtual Worlds blog I seemed to use up all my writing time and ideas. So, my blog -- this blog -- got ignored.

Now, I have completed grad school and settled into just working -- and hopefully I'll have more time for this blog.

My job has again shifted. I am starting to work on the Java Brand and Eco programs. While I enjoyed working on the Sun in Second Life project, I am energized by the change and enjoying my new projects! And I have the opportunity to write a bit with this new stuff I'm working on -- and I love to write. So, I'm having fun! (Which is important in a job -- in my opinion.)

So, sorry for the lack of entries as of late... Going forward I hope to be better at writing and posting!
