Why I Like Libraries
I have always liked libraries -- the
atmosphere, the silence. When I was working on an undergraduate
student I would spend hours researching, both for projects and for my
own curiosity.
Now, I am a graduate student and the majority of the information I need
is available on the internet. So, you could say I no longer need the
library, but that's not true. I still go to the library to do my
research. I sit in the quiet sanctuary and perform my research on the
web. I sit between the stacks of books and type on my laptop.
So, why do I still come here to research? I find it calming. It's quiet. And it makes me happy. Does it help me focus? No! I am constantly getting up to look at a book or diverting my research to a topic unrelated to the task at hand. But, I'm not here to work faster or focus more -- I'm here because the environment makes me happy.
Why am I writing about libraries today? Well, I just spent my afternoon in one of the reading rooms at my university. Sitting here I realized I don't spend enough time in libraries. So, it inspired me to write a short blurb to remind me to spend more times in quiet, calming places that make me happy -- like libraries!
(Yes, this post officially confirms that I'm a geek!)
