More OpenSolaris & GPLv3

Stephen Harpster started a conversation (here, here) about OpenSolaris and GPLv3. Yes, this is the millionth such discussion, but it's the first being started by the OpenSolaris engineering director at Sun. That makes it significant. I have no clue what the OpenSolaris community will decide when v3 comes out, but it's really cool that they get a say in the conversation. Seems pretty mixed so far. Feel free to chime in.

So much is perception. People perceive Linux to be more popular than Solaris. People perceive it to be better. In some ways it might be. But think about the perception change of OpenSolaris beating Linux to the punch! If you want to take a shot at the desktop try the Nexenta distribution. It could easily compete with RH/Suse/Ubuntu.

I am kind of new to Linux/BSD/Solaris. I spent the last month surfing the web, looking for information about different forms of open software, studying the history of open software movement. I can say now that only GPL/LGPL licenses can protect the community of open software users from being tared into smaller pieces, pieces that will become part of some company's user base. During this month of gathering information I realised that even when developer groups/companies throw the bait of free software and manage to steer manpower in the direction they want, there is no guarantee that what they say is completely true (see the Novel-Microsoft agreement for example). I understand the rush for money, but I do not want to see my free time spent for nothing when something goes bad. An entire operating system released to the community offers such guarantees, especially after we all saw Java going open. Also, it seems to me that the community of open software users and developer really needs to be more organised and I think that Sun has the experience necessary to act as a coordinator. I have seen it in the past and I am certain that I will see it again. There is no wander that many companies started porting their software to Solaris: they see the inevitable emerging of a unitary user community. Keep it open, keep it safe :)
