I'm moving to Japan
Every few years big changes come into my life -- some forced and
some by choice, some nasty and some really quite nice. This new change
is going to be wild and will probably challenge me almost as
much as having a kid -- which damn near killed me, by the way.
So, here it is: I'm moving to Japan. Sometime in July if all goes well. And, yes, I'm staying at Sun on OpenSolaris. I'll be working from Sun's Yokohama office.
I moved west from Boston (after growing up in New York), so I figure I'd keep going west till it becomes east. I've been fascinated with Asia since I was a teenager, so now I'll get to experience it rather directly and in a very different way from just visiting. San Francisco is great, but my wife's family lives in Japan and I've been wanting to go for years. So, that's convenient. My family lives in Florida (and several other states), so we'll have to collect a lot of frequent flier miles.
On the work side, there's a lot going on throughout Asia with OpenSolaris -- more than we see, from what I'm hearing. Language is an issue. Culture is an issue. Expectations and perspectives are issues. All that spells opportunity to me -- both personally and professionally. I'm hearing more and more about Japan specifically, but certainly there are the emerging giants in China and India -- both of which I plan to get deeply involved with. I want to dive into some of these emerging markets, and meet the people in the community who are doing the building. And I want to establish better connections to our OpenSolaris operations here in the United States. It's all about building and connecting communities, and that's a global phenomenon.
So, expect this blog to change over time. I'm bringing my camera, so there will be lots of pictures as I travel throughout Asia -- lots of new people, lots of new places, lots of OpenSolaris pervading everything. And as I learn Japanese, there will be a lot of Kanji (but mostly Hiragana and Katakana initially) that replaces the English. Some stuff I'll blog exclusively in Japanese, some exclusively in English, and some in both languages. I think my wife will have to help me at first, but my goal is to be fluent in Japanese before my kid. She's only one, so that shouldn't be a problem. Right?

Congratulations! That's going to be a blast. Just don't forget to teach your daughter english too...
I'm going to Japan in 10 days, and I wish I was staying...
