Some interesting comments here from Devnet on "Solaris, Open Source, and the Schwartz ..."

If we were face to face right now Mr. Schwartz, I'd offer you a cup of coffee and a bundle of roses. That way you would either wake up and smell the roses...or take time to smell the coffee :)  Good luck with that Solaris thing ... I've been a loyal user since Solaris 2.0.  I'll hate to see it go.

Love the little smiley face tucked in there. Nice touch. Not to worry, though, Devnet. We're not going anywhere. Keep watching.

Comments:

I truly am ;p and eagerly. I learned *nix on a SunOS 5.3 box at college and haven't forgotten that. I actually like Solaris quite a bit but I'm really not secure in what it is trying to do recently. It will be interesting how things play out. :)

Interesting. I visit this same posting after 3 months...two of which Solaris 10 has been made available for download...and we have a million downloads. Not bad. However, compare that to a project with a community and the million is a fly spec...19,000,000 downloads of firefox in 10 wks. That's what it will take for Solaris to succeed on the x86 platform. Solaris just doesn't have it right now...I'm not sure if you guys ever will. I'm not saying the entire company will die or mass chaos will erupt at board meetings. But revenue has been down for 3 straight years...top that off with supporting expensive SPARC and not supporting x86 (hence, missing the boat), and I'd say you've got yourself a recipe for a downward spiral. I don't want this, I don't jeer at this, I don't applaud it. It saddens me...hence my concerned postings.
