Toshiba Ships OpenSolaris on the Mini
Toshiba now ships OpenSolaris on
the mini NB200 (Intel Atom), which goes right along with OpenSolaris on the
Portégé R600 and the Tecra M10. I have the M10. I hope to get
light and thin with the mini soon (it's less than 3 pounds and under an
inch thick so it fits right in your shirt pocket). This is really great
news. OpenSolaris is getting more popular on these Netbooks, so the opportunity can only be huge.
But I've been so busy lately, I totally missed this announcement. Right now Toshiba ships the OpenSolaris laptops to the US and the UK. When will they go global?
Go buy the Toshiba mini NB200 here. | My Toshiba blog tag here.

Two issues here:
1 - ) in initial announcements "the rest of the world" were meant o be able to order these by the end of the year...are we sticking to that timeframe?
2 - ) Why does this thing ship with Windows on it as well? Many of us will be paying the ~40 OEM windows charge when we wont even use it...why?

re: The rest of the world: I don't know. Heck, I didn't even know they were shipping on the mini. :) But I can't wait to get one.
re: Windows: I don't know -- although I think it's excellent to ship with Windows in a dual boot. I haven't run Windows in about a year, so it will be good to use it again with OpenSolaris.
Ping the forums on os.com and ask. I'm just a fan watching from the outside on that program.

Yep, it's a cool little machine. I've been using it with OSOL since September and it works quite well.
I use it to go to meetings with clients, and as a "backup appliance" (rsync+snapshots). So at meeting I have a copy of any any information that could be relevant.
The main issue is a problem with baterry status update (http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=11630), since Toshiba is offering it commercially I guess this should be solved, but had no news from the bug. I'm using snv_127 and the problem seems to be still there.
