There is an interesting discussion going on in the Japan OpenSolaris Community. Ken Okubo has been floating the idea of translating the OpenSolaris Bible into Japanese. The thread is getting long and it looks like there is some progress. Translating a book that is over a thousand pages long as a community project is a big deal. If you'd like to contribute, ping Ken on ug-jposug at opensolaris dot org. He's a good guy. Sign up to the JPOSUG list here.

Imagine how helpful it would be to get such a book localized into Japanese. It would be a fantastic community-building tool.

USENIX Magazine has a review of Pro OpenSolaris by Harry J. Foxwell and Christine Tran.

"As I mentioned, the chapters on ZFS and virtualization are incredibly strong, and I would certainly recommend this book to anyone interested in a Linux alternative with cutting-edge features and an active community base. "

Here's the cover for the new ZFS book in Japan by Hisayoshi Kato, Michitoshi Sato, Nagahara Niroharu, and Imai Satoshi -- ZFS 仮想化されたファイルシステムの徹底活用 (大型本). I have a copy here in the office. Pretty slick. The cover was just published on Amazon a few minute ago. I think it goes on sale next week. Please note: this is not a translation of a western text. It's an original work from OpenSolaris community engineers in Japan and only appears in Japanese.

Four members of the Japan OpenSolaris Community wrote a book on ZFS recently. It`s coming out in July, and it`s specifically for the Japanese market. The cover has not been selected yet, but here are the early details: ZFS 仮想化されたファイルシステムの徹底活用 (大型本) by Hisayoshi Kato, Michitoshi Sato, Nagahara Niroharu, and Imai Satoshi. This is quite a significant contribution to the community in Japan because it`s important to have technical content written by Japanese engineers for Japanese engineers. Translating English content from the west good, of course, but the generation of original content in Japanese also needs to be part of this community`s growth plans.

Very cool to see another book out there on OpenSolaris. This book is based on the OpenSolaris 2008.11 release and assumes readers are already familiar with the
user and development environments of Gnome and Linux. So, pick it up and get comfortable with OpenSolaris as well. The book list grows.

Congrats to Harry Foxwell and Christine Tran.

via John Jiang on advocacy-discuss. Very cool to see a new book about OpenSolaris coming out in China. Just like the Japanese book last week, this new book in China ships with the OpenSolaris 2008.05 CD.

There is a new book about OpenSolaris in Japan -- OpenSolaris スタートアップバイブル. That Japanese means Startup Bible. There's a CD in the back with OpenSolaris 2008.05, too. This is probably the first book on OpenSolaris in Japan. OpenSolaris in a bed of roses. Looks cool.

Our buddy Rich Teer finds himself on Slashdot today. Slashdot is featuring Teer's book, Solaris Systems Programming. Pretty darn nice review up there. So, congrats, Rich. All the best with the book.

Rich is also an active developer in the OpenSolaris Pilot Program we started a few weeks back. We're quite lucky to have him around, I'd say.
