Solaris 9 introduced a new feature called wanboot.   Wanboot is used to install over the network.  But unlike inetboot, you can boot over the internet and not just your Local Area Network.

Solaris 9 requires a boot CD to use this feature.  That is you need to place the boot CD in the client's drive when you want to install Solaris 9.  But that is not necessary for Solaris 10.

I created a simple setup of wanboot server and client. The setup took some time as I had to read the document at every step. I skipped the security related steps as my server and client were in a LAN.  And it worked beautifully.

Wanboot requires more setup than inetboot.  But has its advantages in a LAN too.  For eg.  inetboot is based on RFCs that assumed standard Class A/B/C networks.  Of course, inetboot has been modified to consider CIDR.  But there are some topologies where inetboot fails to work.  Wanboot does not depend on the topology.  As long as the wanboot server is accessible,  there are no issues.  And if you are setting up wanboot inside your LAN, you can skip the security related steps.
