Honeycomb Press Coverage following Yesterday's Network Computing The press is starting to talk about Honeycomb following our apperence yesterday. Click the publication name headings below to see the full articles.

InformationWeek

"One other project on the horizon is Honeycomb. While vague on details, Sun describes the offering as the first programmable storage system, incorporating Solaris APIs, extensible metadata and query, and application awareness for divvying parts of applications between the system and the storage appliance. Eventually, Sun expects customers will also be able to run code from within the system, said Fidelma Russo, vice president of product development in the data management group. Honeycomb essentially blurs the line of where an applications lives, enabling pieces that should reside near data to do so, while other pieces reside in storage. With Honeycomb will come a new category of a secondary storage device for optimized throughput, density and cost savings."

ComputerWorld

"Sun did not formally announce its Honeycomb content-addressed storage device, which it has been demonstrating recently. But Honeycomb is shipping now in limited quantities and will be generally available this quarter, said James Whitemore, vice president and chief marketing officer for Sun’s data management group. The device stores metadata and makes it available through application programming interfaces to applications, which makes it searchable and retrievable. It is similar to hierarchical storage management but allows an application to put it into production as required, he said."

NetworkWorld

"Further, Sun intends to preview Projects Honeycomb and Thumper. Honeycomb is Sun's content-addressable storage array that consists of processors that can be scaled horizontally to create a low-cost clustered architecture. The Sun StorageTek 5800, aka Honeycomb was demonstrated at the National Association of Broadcasters show two weeks ago. It uses metadata to identify and classify data stored on NAS devices and file servers throughout the network." (2006-05-03 10:48:11.0) Permalink

News and NAB Two exciting Honeycomb updates:

1) news.com ran a front page story about Honeycomb. Some of the information in the article is a bit stale, including the picture, but stay tuned, I expect you will be hearing more news very soon!

2) We are making quite a splash at NAB2006. So many interested potential customers have come by the booth, our folks are starting to lose their voices :) Here are a few shots:

It's really getting exciting right about now We have been so busy! It appears I've neglected this blog for some time. Our team has gotten much larger, our lab much more full, and our feature set much richer since I posted last. I can't reveal any juicy details quite yet, but let's just say that archival storage is about to get very sexy. Man, everywhere you look around this company right now there's something disruptive being designed and delivered. This is going to be an amazing year. I swear this is the most exciting time to be at a company like Sun. It must have felt like this right before we transitioned from workstations to servers. Hold on to your hats... Honeycomb Wins Chairman's Award So we recently learned that Honeycomb has won Sun's Chairman's Award. This is the most prestigious award Sun gives out internally, and it recognizes technical innovation. It is my understanding that Scott M. personally approves the finalists. Nice work to everyone then and now who took us this far so fast!

We made the front page of CNet's news.com Front page is here.

It's been there for 6.5 hours so far.

Eventually it will roll off the front page, and can then be found here.

There's even a photo of the hardware.

ZDNet UK also has a story. (2005-01-28 10:57:44.0) Permalink Comments [0]

Hello, again. Another day brings another Honeycomb article:

Internet News

Sideways was really good, but you'd think looking at Rotten Tomatoes that it was the best movie in years, and I wouldn't go that far. (2005-01-06 00:46:09.0) Permalink Comments [0]

Hello, World. So, as is obligatory, I'll start off with a bit about myself. Hopefully this will help Google lead you here if you used to know me, or know people or places I know. Please mail me at jer@sun.com if you think you do.

I grew up in Bellevue, Washington, just outside of Seattle, and graduated from Bellevue High in 1992. I graduated in Computer Science from U. C. Berkeley in 1997, and have worked at Microsoft (on Excel 4.0 and 5.0), Netscape (on Netcenter), ThinkLink, and Scale Eight. I've worked here at Sun as a softare engineer on Honeycomb since it really got going in June of 2003, when Steve Waterhouse hired a pile of great people in a single month and started to turn his pretty amazing idea into reality.

I'm currently a programmer on, and the software development manager for Honeycomb. Our team works in downtown San Francisco, which is my favorite of the U.S. cities I've lived in or visited. I see no reason to leave. Ever.

Honeycomb recently got some great press. Here are links to some of the articles:

InfoWorld + ComputerWorld

The Register

I'll tell you more about Honeycomb later.

I'm heading out to check out Sideways, which I've heard is a pretty good movie. Stay tuned...
