With this blog I would like to introduce FishCAT member Kanae Kotake.  The first part is the FishCAT survey with Kana, the second part is Kana's bio. Kana is a very experienced tester.  She has good eyes and sees the issues hardly noticed by others. She is a very succeful working mother, she wrote about 20 technical books. She said "my dream is to be an software testing architect, so I'm really enjoying beeing a FishCAT", we are really enjoying having Kana in FishCAT program !

GlassFish Quality Community (GFQC): What functions you like GlassFish v3 Prelude, and what you like to see improvement

Kana: Windows Installer. This will surely attract novice users to GlassFish. For improvement would like to see in JRuby on Rails related functions.

GFQC: What things you like about FishCAT, and what you like to see improvement

Kana: FishCAT is a really nice activity. It will be better if members could communicate each other.

GFQC: Besides participating in GlassFish Beta testing, what other things you would like to do to contribute to GlassFish quality ?

Kana: It will be nice if we could arrange complete set of senario for function tests :-) Also, we're planning to organize testing team in Japan GlassFish User's community. It will be wounderful if some local-branches of quality community are organized in some part of the world to share knowledges,

GFQC: Please tell us your most fun memory about FishCAT program

Kana; Well, program ended immidiately after I joined, so not much memories during the period. I'm looking forward to joining next turn

GFQC:  Will you continue with FishCAT program and would you recommend FishCAT to your friends and ask them to join us

Kana:  Yes ! I'm speaking to my friends in a testing engeneer's community.

Bio:
Kanae Kotake: Java engeneer and J(I)STQB certified testing engeneer. She studied international relations in a university in Japan, and
entered a small software company after graduation and started her engeneering career as Delphi programmer, then shifted to VB. She left the company for child-raising, and started writing articles for programming magazine, publishing books related to programming, Java, OOP, and UML besides beeing a mom. She had about 6 running articles in different magazines and published almost 20 independent books.

She just came back to the field of system development about 3 years ago after sending all of her kids to the school. Now she is involving mainly in development of Java EE based enterprise applications. Her dream is to be an software testing architect, so I'm really enjoying beeing a FishCAT

Following are valuable input from Kristian Rink.  The first part is the FishCAT survey question and answer, the second part is Kristian's bio. I have learnt so much from our conversation. Kristian is a very active FishCAT members, he sent about 50 post to quality mailing alias to share his expertise with the community, he reviewed more than 4 documentation and he filed 5 good issues.  Thanks Kristian for your great contribution in FishCAT v1 program, it is so nice to have you in the team !

GlassFish Quality Community (GFQC): What functions you like GlassFish v3 Prelude, and what you like to see improvement

Kristian: I do know a lot of people using tomcat rather than an application server for the sake of being more resource-friendly and "leaner" than a full-blown Java EE environment, on the other hand however lacking a few features (most notably manageability). GFv3 Prelude in my opinion does rather great at filling this gap, providing a "lightweight" Java Web Tier container which still features all the management and administration features a "full" Glassfish offers. This seems rather helpful as it definitely is a "salespoint" compared to tomcat or jetty. Same is Update Center, the ability to easily install additional features in a clean, cross-platform manner.

Possible improvements - two things:

(a) I really would love to see OpenPortal Portlet Container available through the Update Center.

(b) I am still yearning to see more flexible per-application logging configuration, please refer to issue 5683

GFQC: What things you like about FishCAT, and what you like to see improvement

Kristian: Nothing negative to report; it's a pleasant experience and I like the mellow, relaxed style of communication on-list. The idea of having a community pretty much doing "acceptance tests" and having a quick way of reporting any issues related to this seems beneficial to the project as a whole.

GFQC: Besides participating in GlassFish Beta testing, what other things you would like to do to contribute to GlassFish quality ?

Kristian: Not sure whether I can be of any help asides this, maybe reviewing documentation or things like that. Mainly we think doing (load/production) testing is the best we can do so far...

GFQC:  Will you continue with FishCAT program and would you recommend FishCAT to your friends and ask them to join us

Kristian: Yes

Bio: Kristian Rink studied (and, after some years, eventually graduate in) informatio technology a while ago, and now is working as software engineer and 'CTO-alike' in a German SME. Been a fan of Sun technologies ever since getting to know "the internet" more than a decade ago using an old Solaris powered SPARC workstation, and these experiences of the Sun logo being put to stable, innovative, reliable technology wear on until today. Also being into OpenSource technology for quite a while, he like seeing Sun getting outstandingly active about that and is willing to do all he eventually could helping on this path. Kristian wrote a very good feedback on GFv3, he is also on NetBeans Community Docs programme, being "NBCD Evangelist" for German-speaking countries (http://nb-community-docs.blogspot.com/)

Sebastien Dionne 's email id is Survivant, if you read quality alias, you definitely know him, he is one of the most active FishCAT members in quality alias.  He tested many, almost all the GlassFish v3 Prelude promote builds, filed many good bugs/RFEs which won him 100 CAT Points,  #2 in the FishCAT v1 program.  Congratulations Sebastien and thank you so much for helping us testing GlassFish v3 Prelude !

Following are valuable input from Sebastien.  He said "That means a lot for me, my expertise is recognized from the community." Yes, your expertise means a lot to us.  "One thing will stay after FishCAT.  The knowledge that I acquired for GF are the investment for my work.",  Yes, learning from each other, sharing the knowledge is so wonderful, not just to work, to life also !

GlassFish Quality Community (GFQC): What functions you like GlassFish v3 Prelude, and what you like to see improvement

Sebastien: I like Installer and Admin gui. 

For Installer: The features that I would like to see (I think some of them are already filled as enhancement) is the be able to configure within the installer the context handler like : comet, mod_jk...  that Will avoid us to edit domain.xml manually.  Be able to upgrade a previous installation.

For Admin gui : have a better feedback from the python installation for update tool.  I had so much time a error in the console, but nothing was return to the console like a error message.  Like the installer, be able to configure and install comet, mod_jk.  Fix the javacsript error in the console.  if there is a concurrency error, that can cause more problem later, and like Sun reuse the component into others projects, that could be problematic.

GFQC:  What things you like about FishCAT, and what you like to see improvement

Sebastien: The best part of fishcat is the feedback.  I never got a bad response from a developer because I found a bug.  They are happy about receiving enhancements and they are willing to do it quickly.  It's a two ways exchange, our arguments are accepted.  Most important point is when we found a bug, we are almost certain that it will be fixed soon.  Most of the time when you filled a bug on a forum, you are never sure that it will be fixed.  Something the bug is blocking you.

GFQC:  Will you continue with FishCAT program and would you recommend FishCAT to your friends and ask them to join us :-)

Sebastien:  I'll continue for sure the next time.  I don't have friends that have time to play with a appserver, but I could say that if my co-worker use GF, they will participate

GFQC:  Any other suggestion you like to let us know, your input is very valuable to improve GlassFish quality, thanks !

Sebastien: have a weekly checklist of all the issues (bugs and enhancements).  Like a page of all the issues filled for v3 (and the bugs that were there before that) and when a issue is fix, put a green checkbox for it.  like that we will know all the things that are fixed and if we need to test the bugs that we filled. Also and have others pages in the report.  The weekly page, all the issues fixed in the previous week. If a issue is delayed to a next release, tell us why.  Like that the guy that filled the issue won't considerate that his issues are not importantes.

GFQC: Please tell us your most fun memory about FishCAT

Sebastien:  The best part was when I received questions and request for help for something that wasn't part of FishCAT, not a bug that I filled.. something outside that.  That means a lot for me,  my  expertise is recognized from the community.

One other thing that I like, and when I asked for samples, that I wasn't able to find, to allow my to test.  Like when I asked for a complete sample for OpenESB.  The guy were willing to help me (even if I didn't receive the sample, I think the guy doesn't have one yet)

One thing will stay after FishCAT.  The knowledge that I acquired for GF are the investment for my work. 

Bio: Sebastien Dionne graduated from university in Software Engineering. He started his career making rich client applications for telecommunications companies using Swing. Now he is focussing on J2EE applications in banking companies. His job is mainly to provide real-time applications web based and gateways for the stock market.

Just a side note, I wonder if Sebastien accidentally decreased the counter in his stock market program :-)

Adam Bien is one of FishCAT members who helped testing GlassFish v3 Prelude.  We saw many Bugs/RFEs filed by him, now let's get to meet him, following is his bio from the Artical he sent me.  I also asked him to give us some input on FishCAT,  here is what he wrote, it made me laugh and hope will make you laugh too.  Adam got 155 CAT Points, become our  #1 FishCAT in the program.  Congratulations Adam and thank you so much for helping us testing GlassFish v3 Prelude,  and thank you for sharing your J2EE  knowledge with us !

GlassFish Quality Community (GFQC): What things you like v3 Prelude, and what you like to see improvement

Bien: I really appreciate the embedded capabilities and the availability of EJB 3.1 support - this is important for my projects. The monitoring capabilities look promising as well.

GFQC: What things you like FishCAT, and what you like to see improvement

Bien: I really appreciated the instant, amazingly short feedback cycle and the short line to the engineers. It was a pleasure for me to participate. I would suggest for FishCAT v2 to improve the logo.  There is a huge room for improvement. The name is not that exciting as well. GlassCAT or even StealthCAT sounds more interesting :-) . Everything else worked perfectly for me.

GFQC: Would you recommend FishCAT to your friends and ask them to join us :-)

Bien:  Absolutely! Not only friends, but family as well ;-)

Bio: Java Champion Adam Bien is a self-employed consultant, lecturer, software architect, developer, and author in the enterprise Java sector in Germany who implements Java technology on a large scale. He is also the author of several books and articles on Java and J2EE technology, as well as distributed Java programming. His books include J2EE Patterns, J2EE HotSpots, Java EE 5 Architectures, Enterprise Architectures, Enterprise Java Frameworks, SOA Expert Knowledge, and Struts, all published in German.

A BEA technical director, Bien is also a member of the NetBeans Dream Team; an Expert Group member of the Java Community Process for EJB 3.1, JPA 2.0, and Java EE 6; and involved in embedded Java, Grid, and P2P technology. GlassFish v3 Prelude is released, I just feel my job as FishCAT v1 coordinator is not done without writing this blog to list the great contribution done by FishCAT members and to thank them deeply !

• “Win – Win” program. I am looking forward to continue working with you all in FishCAT v2, v3 ... :-)

In May 2008 after JavaOne Satya and Mimi helped me connected with Sun globalization team in Beijing China to get the team help to promote GlassFish Quality Community in China.  China is the country I came from and I was so happy that I could connect to China through my work.   Not for too long, we about 10 people from Beijing and in US formed a virtual glassfish-china team.  In this blog, I would like to post the first Sun Tech User Group event  held on 10/8. Our virtual glassfish-china team members Jim Jian, Ada Li, Yu Wang, Carol Zhang participated in this event.  It is a great event and I wished I could be there :-) Here is the email report from Ada Li: We launched our first Sun Tech User Group event yesterday.  There are 23 engineers who have interests in GlassFish attending the meeting. GlassFish Quality Community announced it's first community Beta testing program FishCAT the end of last month. We got great response from community on FishCAT program. We have recruited 30 FishCAT members across 15 different countries. We will start the FishCAT testing on GF v3 in 1-2 weeks to cover 15 GlassFish sub areas including documentation testing.
