Changing BIOS settings on a Toshiba
I have a Toshiba Tecra M5 laptop with Windows XP installed on it and I wanted to create a partition and install the Solaris Express Developer Edition(SXDE). I will write about my partitioning and SXDE installation experiences in another blog entry. The Solaris Express, Developer Edition Installation Guide explains the process. To install SXDE you have to change the BIOS settings for the laptop to boot from the CD-ROM. For this particular laptop,the usual F1,F2 keys did not work. I checked Toshiba's PC support site, which lists 3 ways to change the BIOS settings on a machine with Windows XP. The only way I could change the settings was through the Toshiba HW Utility (under Control Panel). This was already installed on my laptop and I changed the Boot Priority to CD-ROM->FDD->HDD->LAN instead of the default HDD->FDD->CD-ROM->LAN setting. I just got a Toshiba Tecra M9. Was able to get into the BIOS settings screen by typing CTRL+ESC at the Toshiba screen on boot and then pressing F1 when prompted.
Maybe that works for your laptop too?

Had no problem getting into what is called 'bios' on year old Toshiba satellite u205. yes could change w/HW tool or FN key.
Problem-setting a password, you have to be fast to get in before os boots.
#2-what u change there is saved to 'cmos'. most pcs use 'phoenix bios'. It is set by vendor. Not seen a vendor machine where u could get into full 'bios options' yet.
#3 Mscorp has articles from 2002 @ vendors setting bios wrong. Intel has a 'disclaimer'. Re-mscorp--bios set wrong conflicts w/windows bootstrapping.
Found the files. Lots of errors.Consequence-seeing more bios rootkits. This is not just one vendor IMO. New Toshiba shows 'code errors'-ie vista conflicts with vendor additions or tweaks.Same things w/xp-vista error files ezier to find tho. Hardware wize, lots of 'cache misses'.
best to build your own,but creates a serious problem for laptops.
