Playing mp3s on your Solaris laptop
With SXDE 5/07 running on my Toshiba M5 laptop, I use either RealPlayer10 or the Java Media Player to play my mp3s, both of which are bundled with the OS and need no separate downloads . You can also try XMMS, a free multimedia player for unix systems. Read the documentation before you download and start compiling, as XMMS requires some libraries before you can successfully compile.
If you run into audio problems on your laptop, make sure you have audio on your laptop (ls -l /dev/audio). You can download and run the Sun Device Detection Tool (read my earlier blog on this) which will list out the devices on your machine alongwith the corresponding driver status. Also of relevance is the Hardware Compatibility Tool which lists the devices compatible with Solaris. This list is available for both Solaris 10 and SXDE.
