When you try NetBeans IDE Japanese, Chinese, Korean and other localized version on Linux, you may encounter the problem that multibyte characters are garbled or rectangles are displayed instead like this screenshot.
Check release notes of JDK and IDE first
It is a very common issue that the JDK font could not render multibyte characters on some Linux distributions when the JDK 's font settings are not correct in your Linux installation. Please check first in the IDE's release notes and JDK release notes whether your Linux distribution is officially supported by Sun's JDK. NetBeans 5.5 IDE Japanese, Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese version and other packs have been tested on RedHad Enterprise Linux version 3. This issue may be happening on other modern Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora Core.
- NetBeans
If you encounter this issue, please consult with web pages, mailing list and forums of the Linux distribution to get the proper setting of JDK fonts and workaround. The font issues are very common and someone can help you. Try to search the web by the word "fontconfig.properties" and your Linux distribution like "ubuntu". You will get many useful information. Also check FaqI18nLinuxAsianFonts in NetBeans User FAQ.
For Japanese, I'm gathering useful links in Japanese NetBeans User FAQ,
