The Slovak National Library recently held their third annual digital library and preservation archiving summit at the Hotel Družba Jasná.  The Slovak National Library has chosen Sun as their strategic partner for the infrastructure architecture to support their digitization, access, and long term preservation of the National Library Archives.  With a rich history dating back to the middle of the 19th century, consists of 110 libraries and over 4 million titles.  The preservation and presentation of these Slovak documents and materials is important to education, heritage, and culture.

The efforts of the centralization of digitization materials is all made possible with the Sun Modular Data Center.  The Sun Modular Data Center provided the Slovak National Library with the ability to easily deploy the infrastructure required to support the digitization project without building a costly new data center.

The long term preservation of the digital objects is managed using Sun Storage Archive Manager (SAM-QFS) running on clusters of Sun X4500 Storage Servers and SL8500 Modular Tape Library. preservation.  The Sun Storage Archive Manager (SAM) software provides data classification, centralized meta-data management, and policy based data placement accross the storage platform in order to optimize the storage efficiency based on data access requirements and usage patterns.  SAM is key to the protection, migration, and the most cost effective long-term preservation of digital objects.

The Slovak National Library is also taking advantage of the Sun Ray thin client technology for providing access to library resources throughout the county.  The ability to centrally manage over 2,000 Sun Rays throughout 110 libraries has enabled the library to provide common services to all Slovak libraries.
