I didn't quite realize how lucky I am to have this free employee blog site until I recently tried to help some people get their own site set up.
While I never expect a free site to be the best, I certainly didn't expect the wide variety of quality that I found. I can say now, with a fair amount of confidence, that the Roller software that Sun uses is definitely one of the best. The latest version, which we're running internally, is even better. Hopefully, it'll make it to the external site soon.
The free "we host your blog" sites vary quite a bit. I had high hopes for blogger.com, since it's backed by Google. No such luck. Blogger is rather cumbersome to use, not very configurable, and mangles most of the HTML you might use in a posting. Even a basic table wouldn't render properly. The less said about the "Hello" method for storing images, the better.
livejournal.com was ok, but the software was a little clunky. However, I really appreciate their attitude since it's basically an all volunteer organization. I have every confidence that it will get even better.
I ended up selecting blogdrive.com for my friend and myself (for some non-Sun related stuff). The interface is quite clean and if you want to mess with the style sheets, it's all right there. The main downside for the free version is limited space for storing images. However, they don't seem to have a problem displaying images stored elsewhere.
If anyone has any more comments or suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
