How do you pronounce VOIP? Computers

VOIP While watching the Superbowl I heard a commercial for "Business VOIP." The annoucer pronouced VOIP as a word, "voip", rhyming (sort of) with John Voight. That was the first time I've heard that term pronounced like that. I've always read that in my head as "voice over IP" or spelled out V-O-I-P. Voip, as a word, just sounds funny to me. In English, nothing even sounds like voip, as evidenced by my lame John Voight rhyme.

Am I off in the weeds on this one? Does everyone else say "voip" but me? I still say U-R-L instead of "earl" and V-I instead of "vi" because I'm just not that lazy. At least on those, I know that I'm not alone.

I've always said (and thought) voip as a word. As for URL I used to say U-R-L but I tend to swap between both U-R-L and earl now. As for violent violet vi, she always be vi to me.

Immortalized in this blog comment, I'm predicting that voip will never become a real word. I think this usage is a (really) lame attempt to 'consumerize' the term. However consumers don't need to know that what they are using is Voice over IP - if they do then the execution is all wrong. Skype (which IMO is awesome) doesn't really mention VOIP - consumers don't need to know. And for the small % of consumers who understand the technology - voip will never be accepted - I'll certainly never use it.

Well, VoIP is just that VoIP. Sounds like voice only with a 'p' and it is being presented to customers as 'VoIP'. Remember corporate America cannot survive without acronyms. It's just the way of life. So as long as your head says Voice Over IP and your mouth states 'VoIP', I don't think there will be any misunderstanding at all ;-) Also, 'earl' instead of URL ???? Man, that's the first I've heard of that. Now, how many of you even take the time to say www as in the leter double-u;double-u;double-u; or do you say dub dub dub; or do you just leave it off

Rich, I agree 100%. Personally, I think that "Internet Phone" makes more sense. Excuse me while I go trade mark that term right now...

Grahamm, you and I may need to become mortal enemies! :)

Anna, I don't say anything for "www." You can't beat zero syllables. But I would say w-w-w over dub-dub-dub because that sounds dumb-dumb-dumb.

Funny thing, I heard VoIP pronounced as a word for the first time today on a computer talk show on a Los Angeles radio station. The host is supposed to be an expert on computers, but every time I heard him say "voip," I kind of cringed because it just sounds horrible. I'm in the wireless telecommunications industry, and when we talk about how VoIP is being developed as a future way to carry wireless phone calls, I've always heard it said as "Voice over IP." I guess people get lazy and don't want to say a few extra syllables. I've never hear "yurl" for URL and I would never say that. And for WWW, there's no point in saying it anymore. Notice how in advertising they stopped including the WWW in most cases a couple of years ago? It's implicitly understood by the general public by now, combined with the fact that you don't need to enter it into the browser. And please don't say "dub dub dub," because that is majorly annoying.

Oh, and I forgot to comment on vi. If you hear it pronounced like a word, "vi," that's a way of telling that the person is unfamiliar with that editor. It is definitely pronouced "V-I". Well like you said, you know you're not alone on that and URL, and I don't think you're off in the weeds on VoIP!

Amen, brother!

> If you hear it pronounced like a word, "vi," that's a way of telling > that the person is unfamiliar with that editor. Not necessarily. During my years in college, the editor of choice for my friends and me was VI. We were very familiar with it. And during my entire time at the college, I never once heard anyone pronounce it by saying "V-I", it was always "vi". (Rhymes with "sky".) Who knows, maybe it was a regional thing. (Now don't even get me started on emacs or pico.)

Skype - voip, skype - voip... - they *nearly* rhyme. I wonder if Skype's name was constructed like this intentionally. Sky-voip? Depends also on one's accent of course. Skoip - voyp. Hehe.
