Pet Peeve: Auto-Locking Door Life

Our Honda Accord has a safety (?) feature (?) that automatically locks the doors after a period of time.

I hate this feature.

Here's how it works.

  1. I use the keychain fob to unlock my car and open the trunk.
  2. I put my stuff in the trunk.
  3. The car locks the doors just as I'm about to get in.

Here's the other way it works:

  1. I drive somewhere and exit my car.
  2. I forget to lock the door when I leave.
  3. I return, hours later, to find the car still unlocked.

I'm guessing that this auto-lock system was made by the same Honda engineers who require that I turn both the heater and the air conditioner on just to defrost my windshield.

Toyota's are the same way! I never leave my Camry without either making sure my keys are in my hand or leaving the door ajar because I am never sure whether it will lock the doors or not. And I always open and close the back door of my four-door when I park in the garage, because it will auto-lock the non-driver doors unless they have been used and the passenger door is the most convenient in my garage and I hate trying the passenger door and finding it locked and having to walk around to the driver side when I want something in the glovebox. I love the remote key fob, but I wish it would just do what I said and not try to guess what would be best.

Most VW's are the same way, too, with an added bonus of tripping the panic alarm if the car detects that a door is open when the locking mechanism drops down. Makes for a quick red-faced leap to open either the front passenger door, or the drivers door while pressing the unlock button on the FOB.
