Flickr Video Computers

Flickr launched its new video service today (Tuesday 08 April).  For me this is awesome because I already use flickr for my photos.  Like most people, my digital camera also takes decent quality videos and it is very nice to have them in the same stream as my photos.

There are two features that really make flickr better for personal video clips over YouTube.

  1. Better image quality - See below.

  2. Can download the original - I liked Google Video for this same reason.  It's very valuable to have off-site backups of your photos and videos so now I have both in one place.

Of course, with only a 90 second limit, YouTube, and other services, are still better for longer and professional vids.

Compare the quality of the same video uploaded to both YouTube and Flickr.

Update: Found one strike against Flickr: The embedded video doesn't appear/play in Google Reader. If you don't see the Flickr video window try here.

Update 2: According to Kellan of Flickr, this is a known problem.  You can work around the Google Reader problem by subscribing using the RSS feed and not the Atom feed.

Universal Goes Crazy Music

In one of the worst abuses of the DMCA, Universal Music had YouTube take down a 29 second video of a child dancing to Prince's song Let's Go Crazy.  Fortunately, the EFF, and the mom, are suing Universal for it.  YouTube also reinstated the video.

The EFF is claiming that 29 seconds falls within "fair use."  I hope they win, but what is completely ridiculous is that the music is just playing in the background.  It's not dubbed over.  No artist in the world could show that this video hurt their IP or affected their sales in any way.

Oxymoron With YouTube on iPhone? Computers

Lots of press today about YouTube on the iPhone, but am I reading too much into the actual press release?  It states that iPhone™ users will be able to enjoy YouTube’s originally-created content on their iPhones.  To me, YouTube and originally-created content are oxymoronic.  Has YouTube created anything original w.r.t content?  Isn't it all uploaded by users and media companies?

I'm probably wrong, and that press release was just badly worded, but wouldn't it awesome if on June 29th the only thing iPhone users could watch was a couple of videos of the YouTube engineering staff waving hello at the camera?
