Java Streaming Video
Today we had a great meeting with the guys at VX30 who have developed and put a patent on a Java-based "player-less" video-on-demand or live broadcast delivery system. A J2ME client is in development now with testing on a major carrier and device platform. Plus, the B-cast system is developed with NetBeans. It's all http delivery so no problems with firewalls, no UDP or RTSP. The whole "player" is executed as a .jar file. The browser downloads it which checks the network speed and then retrieves appropriate file and stream most appropriate for viewing. No upgrades on all the client players since it's all done on the server. They are truly a poster child for Sun's vision. You can check out the quality in the Canvas and Clay project which provides a forum for the artist community in Hawaii to collaborate. It is also the system which powers Maui-online. It's a great and cheap system for anyone interested in video on the web either internally for things like Sun BTV or in any enterprise. We are all headed to Cal Berkeley and Stanford tomorrow to get their feedback and hopefully a great reference site for learning and collaboration in higher education.

Since kevin is in the business of streaming video using Java, I would like to ask him whether it is equally possible to stream video games using many of the Java languages. What are the limitations ? Is it possible to use J# for streaming video with the help of WFC classes ? Is the same possible with applets using JFC classes ? Can Visual Studio launch both WFC and JFC classes ?
