I would not call twitter an AppServer, but it certainly is a PubSub bus. And, to me, that is the part of Twitter that is actually interesting.
If PubSub is what's useful about twitter, then I don't get the high valuation; as PubSub is not very sticky and can be bridged easily
FB (or even linked in) is much more sticky. I think of those as my personal and professional sites, but twitter is just a bus...
