A Crazy Idea About Solaris and Mac OS

I got my brand new Macbook pro recently and I love the cool feeling to hang around with slick GUI of Mac OS. Just read the article on The Register that Apple will integrate ZFS into Mac OS. Well, as a trade, why don't we port Mac OS user interface onto Solaris? Is it a crazy idea?

Comments:

My thoughts were similar to yours when I got my macbook last year. See my blog entry How ever this is not going happen as you observed, for two reasons (a) Apple is not going to loosen up on Aqua (b) Sun has chosen not to get into a proprietary desktop development, which I feel bad for. Its not crazy for end users like us, because we want all the good stuff together, its definitely crazy for the companies and execs.

The link to "The Register" is a dud - it doesn't work. As for the idea, for many years, actually for as long as they are in business, Apple rejected any moves to make their OS work on any generic hardware. MacOS only works on Mac computers, designed and manufactured by Apple. For better for worse, this is the case. I wrote an MBA paper on this topic. It isn't inconceivable, that if Apple made the right moves over 20 years ago, the computer market landscape would have been completely different today, with Apple owning 90% of the market rather than MS. Incorporating MacOS as the UI on top of Solaris will be against Apple strategy in my belief.
