Well, we're into March already and I've been negligent about blogging
more regularly. As one would typically say: "I've been sooo busy with work".
I have been experimenting with VMWare server to put
Solaris x86 on my Gateway laptop. I have Windows XP running as my
host OS (need Windows for some .NET stuff) and wanted to get a sandbox
for Solaris 10 to play with. Another reason was to compare the
JVM monitoring tools in JDK1.5 on Windows versus Linux/Solaris (more on
this later - another good blog subject matter).
Thanks to Matt who sent me the link to this article by Bill Rushmore which outlines out how to create a virtual machine from the VMWare software. What also proved to be helpful was this page outlining good resources for installing Solaris x86.
There are some issues that I need to sort out; namely how to make my Solaris networked when I am on VPN, and also when I use my wireless connection. It works fine when I am plugged into SWAN at work. As the Rushmore article suggest, I am using the bridged network setting for my VM. Obviously, I still have to dig a bit further for that. If anyone has any tips, I would greatly appreciate any pointers.
