Many times I have heard from my friends that SUN technologies are not juicy for Mechanical Engineers. Since my studies on mechanical engineering faculty I have seen that SUN technologies could be very useful for Engineers. Engineers are used to work with MATLAB for theirs simulations. But when they want to publish their results on the WWW they could be little mixed up. Solution could be very simple 
they can use JMatLink library and connect theirs MATLAB simulations with Web Technologies. They can use JMatLink even for controlling real examples through the WEB.
What about SunSPOT. I think place for very good applications are mechanical or machine experiments. SunSPOT could be connected with any sensors and measures important values, like temperatures, acceleration, position, tension, voltage and more ... The best is transferring values over the air to the central computer where will be running appropriate JAVA application.
Lot of Engineers will get many experiences with SUN technologies and they will be happier
