Peter Korn's Weblog The collected occasional commentary by Peter Korn, Accessibility Architect at Sun Microsystems, Inc. |
IDEAS trip reportThe trip to IDEAS in Washington DC started out with beautiful California weather (I was accused of bringing it with me in fact). But then we had an election, and it started to rain, and the ballots were counted, and it rained harder and harder. But I'm sure these two things couldn't be related to one another... In any case, in addition to the election and all, I was here to give a keynote presentation, which is what the sign said outside the keynote hall. But before the keynote (at 1pm), we had an excellent panel discussion on open source accessibility. Modered by Tony Stanco, the three person panel of Janina Sajka, Andy J. W. Affleck, and Pierce Crowell discussed the various open source accessibility efforts they are involved in. Janina talked about console screen access (and her favorite application Speakup); Andy talked about his past work with CAST and his approach toward direct accessibility on the web; and Pierce talked about Sun's involvement in GNOME accessibility. The talk was well attended (50-60 people in the audience), with lots of good questions. Then, a little later in the day I had the delightful opportunity to give the afternoon keynote. I shared the stage with the projector screen, and so had to be careful to not walk in front of it. Unfortunately I did a bit on occasion, as can be seen by the archived webcast of the event, done by the nice folks at TV Worldwide (who have an entire "channel" devoted to accessibility issues). Unfortunately their broadcasts are only in Windows Media format... The talk went well, and afterward I wound up taking questions for another 45 minutes. I've posted the slides to my talk here, at: Access by Contract - The Third Generation Approach to Supporting People with Disabilities. In addition to the presentation, I got a chance to talk with Thomas Timin, the editor of Government Computer News. He wrote a nice article in Government Computer News which was also posted to Linux Insider. Other than the weather and a small matter of provisional ballets in Ohio, it's been a wonderful trip!
