Hello,

The tech talks that i was talking about in previous post went on well!!There were changes in the agenda as Bala couldn make it up.Second year students are also a part of this activity now, and they talked on various topics. The audience also comprised of second years so we could not make it much technical. Here are the details,

Karthik and Sundaram talked on  OpenSolaris for everyone. This had to postponed to saturday  as per the college management's instructions. Not many people could come.(may be because their exams were nearing).

Anugraha talked on Project Indiana , and also showed a demo. She talked on the steps of installation of the slim install as well.Parkavi joined her.Deepika is also one among them. These friends from second year are going to be the  coordinators of the sun club here after.they did a really good job.

Shridhar showed a demo of the computational grid formed at TCE using SGE, (on MAC OS, RedHat Linux and Solaris machines)He gave an elaborate talk on grid computing as the second year students were new to that topic. He gave demo on running batch job through the grid.he is working on running parallel programs.

Geethu talked on SunSPOT and showed a demo of forming wireless network and deploying projects to a remote sunSpot from the base station.

I talked on Sun Studio's features(dbx,Dlight, performance analysis)  its compilers , OpenMP support etc.I also showed them a demo.On the whole things went on fine and good !!!I didnt take much pictures, few are here.

TecUthsav '08 turned out to be a great success!!Sun sponsored the event Lord of the Rings. It is a five stage programming event ,

1) Maze -A virtual maze created using graphics has to be passed through by answering questions on Java Programming

2)Obfuscated Code - A piece of code will be given , the output of the code will be simple (say a division of two numbers) but the code wil be so complicated to understand and finding the flow of code will be really difficult. The participant has to face this challenge.

3)Google Wars - The result of a particular search from google will be given the participant has to figure what exactly is the search string used to obtain that result.

4)Coding in a new language - We will provide the manuals for the language and the contest will be conducted on that language. It basically tests the programmers ability to code in a new language using his logistics .

5)code completion - An incomplete Java code will be given and parts of it have to be completed for a desired output.

I gave a talk on the following topics,

* Introduction to Open Solaris

* Project Indiana

* Solaris for everyone

As many participants were not much introduced to solaris , I restrained myself from talking advance features of Solaris, and just gave an introduction. They also asked questions comparing features of Solaris with other OSes.It was really a different experience to talk to the delegates about opensource and Solaris as they are from different colleges most of which are not aware of Open Solaris.

Here are the pictures that i managed to take,

Yesterday was one of the most memorable days , we had an awesome tech talk , one of the best we have ever had on the campus by Angelo Rajadurai Sun Tech Office , Santa Clara USA, an Alumnus of TCE who passed out of the college in 1990(CSE department).

He came to our college and participated in the alumni meet on 29th July(Sunday). The next day we had the following sessions.

Talk to CSE(Computer science and Engineering) , IT (Information technology)students in KS auditorium from 9:15 to 11:00 am

He gave an introduction to Solaris, Open Solaris.

He spoke a little about Niagara.

He mainly concentrated on ZFS and
Dtrace. He explained  concepts of ZFS-
so wonderfully that many people understood and had many questions for him. He talked on the capacity of ZFS , copy on write, sharing, data integrity and transactional operation,
snapshot, self healing.

He did a demo and showed how to
create an user in zpool , list the users in zpool, how to allocate
space for the users in the zpool, how to restrict the access of an user
in the zpool and how to take snapshots.

He gave a brief introduction to Dtrace and a short demo.we ended up that session there and we had tea break.

We continued the session from 11:20 and lot of people stayed to listen to the special session on Dtrace. That was simply brilliant and he was brilliantly answering people's questions.

While ending
up the session he spoke on Web 2.0. He gave the scope for projects that
can be done as a contribution to the Open Solaris comm
unity and also sponsored to mentor few students.

Ganesh visited TCE yesterday (April 2 nd ) He went to AKCE in the morning and came here at twelve thirty. He met our HOD first and then he addressed the staff members of CSE and IT departments. He spoke on India Universtiy Programme and Sun Guru Programme for teachers. They represented their views and there was a discussion on what has to be done next to take this a step ahead. We had a very quick lunch in the canteen as we were already running short of time. We met the principal and there were some ideas proposed about the Sun Guru programme. I spoke to the principal and there were some proposals . Hoping to execute them soon.
There was a meeting conducted by Accel Frontline ans Sun on March 14th.That took place in GRT Regency , Madurai I got a chance to speak there. I spoke on Sun’s support to academia, its academic developer programmes and how students can really get benefitted out of such activities by learning new technologies and keeping with the pace of technical growth. I cud also interact with many people from academic instituitions , especially professors from various colleges. That was really nice interacting with the sun team (Mr Jayanthi Nagesh , Mr Satish ). who had come there. My friends ashok , geethu and our faculty Mr Balaji accompanied me.

Hello all , i am krithika , campus ambassador of Sun for Thiagarajar college of Engineering , Madurai.
Here is all that i have done so far as a part of campus ambassador programme.
Spoke to staff (January 28 2007 ):
I spoke to the IT and CSE department staff about Sun India University Programs and how do we get benefitted out of it.

The meeting took place in CSE conference hall and nearly 25 teachers attended it.

Students meet ( January 31 2007):

This was the first ever meeting about sun club . I conducted it for the second and

2. Cool products of Sun

Java - J2SE, J2ME, J2EE

NFS

Open Solaris - its features like ZFS,

dtrace,and

i told them what are zones

We had demo session on dtrace
. Bala did that for many who wanted to see the cool new tool !

2.Netbeans
3.what is SDN
4.Open Source and Free Software
5.how to get benefitted from SAI
6.What is Open Sparc

I had already went to all classes privately and i spoke to people and
canvassed them to attend the meeting and join the sun club and so the response was good.

Sun Club Inauguration:

The Sun Club(Sun forum) of our college has been inaugurated. The function took place at the K.M auditorium of our college.

The registration for the Sun Club was also done immediately at the end of function and almost all those who attended the function registered for the club activities.

Nearly 300 attended and we were amazed.

CSE HOD Dr.Rajaram spoke on the importance of FOSS based tools and softwares. Then there was a talk on computers in the past and present by the HOD of IT Dr. U.Nirai Chandran. We had very good support from our staff-co-ordinators, Ms Subhatra and Mr.Emil Selvan.
