being a SUN campus ambassador... living SUNny days

Monday Oct 15, 2007

Being a SUN Campus ambassador was a great time in my life, I really grew a lot in these days in terms of developing my leadership and organizational skills. My student life was largely influenced by this opportunity.

Here is my first ever report to my manager Ganesh Hiregoudar.

Respected Sir/madam,

This month was the one where i laid strong foundations & executed some initiatives, which are required to spark an opensource revolution in this part of Karnataka.

To begin with, I talked about SAI to the HODs of all the concerned departments of our college, and concerned HODs of SDMCET Dharwad, I also convinced them about the benefits of SAI & usage of NetBeans as the IDE in their Labs.

We have begun the first SUN Install fest in our college, by installing OpenSolaris in ISE Labs of our college, so we are up with The SUN Lab.
I have placed the SUN DVDs (OpenSolaris,NetBeans etc) in the CLITE (Central Library & IT Enclave,BVBCET) & on the local Intranet FTP location: ftp://library.bvb.edu for access & downloads by the students, so we are up with SUN Library.

I have collaborated SODC with IEEE student Chapter, Electronics association, ACES (Association of Computer Science & Engg Students), ISE Association & scheduled an exclusive SUN Event ( Hands on Workshop or Contest) in their Annual Tech Fests namely Trishna,Manthan & Sukriti.

Establishment of SUN Opensource Developer's Community (SODC) in our institution was a key development in this month. We have opted for this SODC model instead of a SUN Club, as we have many enthusiastic volunteers.
We are having its inaugural on 6th Oct 2007.
Venue: IMSR Seminar Hall
Timing: 11.30 to 2.00 PM
Expected participation: 200 (approx)
We are having an invited talk on,
"Introduction to, & the power of opensource technologies- SUN's perspective" and "An overview of SOLARIS & its outstanding features as compared to its contemporaries"

As a part of SODC activities, we will be hosting & organizing various SUN Tech Demos, Install fests, tech fests an other events promoting OpenSource  technologies.

We will distribute OpenSolaris (latest Build) DVDs & Pens (or any other goodies) to the participants.

We would like to start off with a bang, by organizing "SUN Software Freedom Week (SFW)-07" from 15th Oct 2007 to 19th Oct 2007 (dates tentative) an exclusive opensource promoter event for BVBCET & SDMCET students.
I will be furnishing with more details on the contests/workshops/Demos that will be conducted as a part of SFW very soon.

Loking forward for your support & guidance.
Thanking You,
Karthik Kulkarni
SUN Campus Ambassador,

BVBCET, Hubli
