It's here. Opening Day
for OpenSolaris. It started nearly 18 years ago as hushed whispers
between Solaris engineers, or in the huddled masses of usenet groups.
Then as 3 years of speculation in mainstream press. Then 9 months ago
“tonic”got started and the pilot went to work. Planning, talking,
blogging,debating, sharing, educating, cajoling, participating.
And today, after OpenSolaris.org was officially “launched”
(or should I say when the 12:01 EDT Press embargo lifted?) it was
business as usual. The people “in” the community came to work. Just
like every Tuesday. Did we need an embargo to mark the
event? Maybe we did. Like the proverbial tree...
Everybody wants the story first, as if it is frozen in time. Not
this story. Nearly 150 blogs from engineers participating in
OpenSolaris greet you when you visit the community. Conversations are beginning,
relationships already forming. The FUN has begun. By now there's been
a few bugs found. Stephen Harpster sent an email to the team a few
days ago saying he was expecting, (even hoping) for that. Because when
you do something this great, you want to keep improving it—and keep it growing.
Why Open Source Solaris?
For the opportunity. Sure. That works.
But pull aside someone who puts back code into the source base, and
the gleam in their eye doesn't say "for the opportunity." It says
"Because We Can".
And that's why I'm here. I join OpenSolaris with a hearty HELLO WORLD.
Hello to a modern, authentic way of connecting with friends, with experts, with heroes.
