What is a Freedom Toaster?
The Shuttleworth Foundation has an
inspired program that
delivers free and open source software to remote regions on server
“kiosks”.
Called Freedom Toasters,
these kiosks allow people to choose the
software and operating systems that they want and to "toast"
them onto CDs, without the need for an Internet connection.
Freedom
Toasters help close the digital divide.
So, Simon says to me a couple of weeks
ago..."Hey, Laura, let's do a toast to Open Source!" Sure,
OpenSolaris can rally a few friends! A couple of email exchanges
with our friend Bruno from SouJava--and we had a registration page
together!
Another email into the JavaOne PR team,
and they said--hey, talk to Sun's Systems team--they're looking for
some action at JavaOne.
Next thing I know, John Fowler's team came on board with THREE
Ultra 20s to donate, and we had something totally cool coming together.
And now, we've got pledge software from
Operating systems (Solaris, OpenSolaris distros, Linux Distros...) to
Development tools (Java Studio Creator, NetBeans, Sun Studio
compilers) to truly outstanding and fun Software like Jini, JXTA,
Looking Glass.
And now, we're throwing open the
invitation to all JavaOne exhibitors...if you have free and open source
software you'd like to contribute to the freedom toaster we're
building...
Register today at
http://freedomtoaster.gobof.org/
and prepare an ISO image of your free
and open source software to be included on the system.
If you are an attendee at JavaOne, join
us Wednesday evening at 7:30 in Moscone room 123 to make your donation.
