Reading
through the ExTENSIVE!!! (read: WOW!) NC05Q3 product news coming out of Sun today,
I found alot of GREAT news...Good for OpenSolaris, Good for our community...
Here's a cool sentence that really puts a fine point on it...
"Sun
builds on the tremendous success of the open
source Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS) to leapfrog competitors in
the industry-standard computing market by delivering systems that are
about one-third the power, one-and-a-half times the performance, and
cost half as much as comparably configured 4-way servers from Dell."
That's not my favorite sentence though. It's true Sun has made it's way back down a long LONG road...and Wall Street agrees--at the time of this posting SUNW stock is above 4...
What's the deal? What's Sun doing??
Another cool sentence
answers that question..."The
result of $500 million in R&D investment each quarter, Sun
unveiled a range of new systems, software and services as part of its
NC05Q3 product launch today." Some folks will make a big deal out
of the Triumphant Return to Wallstreet! (Yes, Jonathan Schwartz WILL be
ringing the closing bell today at the NYSE)
...Some folks will make
a
big deal out of the incredible energy efficiencies that Andy B. and his
team have brought ...proving that it's not only GE who brings good
things to life.
And for us...happy
community members...here's the
summary:
- Sun Fire x64 Servers - including the
2-way Sun Fire X2100,
and 4-way Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 servers, all powered with
the AMD Opteron processor. (THANK YOU HECTOR!!) The new family of Sun
Fire x64 servers runs
the Solaris 10 OS, AND OPENSOLARIS!!! one of the world's most advanced
operating systems
available for x64 systems, as well as many standard Linux distributions
and Windows operating platforms.
- Sun Grid Rack Systems - the new easier to use and install
Sun Grid Rack Systems
--referred to as "essential building blocks for
Grid, high performance computing and Web services applications
deployment". Sounds neat--they are pre-configured for specific industry
workloads, and can
include a choice of Sun's record-breaking Sun Fire x64 servers, Sun
StorEdge(TM) Arrays, the Solaris 10 OS and N1 System Manager software
for simple, remote management capabilities.
- Data Management Portfolio - New or enhanced storage products announced today include the Sun StorEdge(TM) 5310 NAS Appliance Gateway system, Sun StorEdge 3320 SCSI Array, two new Sun StorEdge Capacity-Series (C-Series) Tape Libraries and three new or enhanced software tools. The new Network Attached Storage (NAS), array, tape and storage management software solutions expand Sun's family of open, standards-based storage solutions.
And, the most
interesting bit of all for us...
That's my favorite sentence.
