Blergh.... my kind and considerate neighbors that live upstairs (right above me) in the apartment building I live in decided to have a party last night.  Apparently they asked everyone in the building if they minded.  They also asked me.... they knocked on my door when I wasn't home and concluded that since I wasn't home and didn't answer the door, I must approve.  Plus, it was for a birthday party so that made it all ok anyway... in their logic.

At 23:00 I knocked on their door and asked them to keep the noise down a little... and again at 01:00... and again at 03:00  Each time they said yes no problem, and then turned the volume up even higher.  It all finally ended around 05:00 this morning.

One of the things that I do not understand is... how did anyone in the whole building sleep last night?  The music was so loud in their apartment that I couldn't hear my television in mine (I was watching a movie since there was no chance of sleeping anyway).  They were dancing or stomping like they were doing Riverdance impressions too... especially each time after I politely asked them to keep the noise down.

What do you do in a situation like that?  Call the Police?  Seems like a frivolous and petty thing to do... the Police likely have better things to do than appease an annoyed Canadian who just wanted to sleep.

For just a one time incident I'd let it go, but it if was a regular thing then getting an authority involved may sadly be the only way to resolve it. The Police may not be the best way to do this maybe there is some other way via environmental health or the housing association type body responsible for the apartment building.

Nope, you need to log it with a police department so that if it does become a regular thing, they have a history of complaints to refer to. Nothing worse that finally getting irritated to the point of doing something, only to overreact and be labeled as the bad guy. At least with a history, the cops will understand your frustration.
