OpenPortal, Glassfish and Netbeans...
Wow what an experience. Coming off of JavaOne I know have this renewed energy
around Java. So I tried out some open source technologies that Sun has jumpstarted
in one way or another.
So I started with installing Glassfish. What an easy application server to instal and
configure. The administrative interface is very similar to the Sun Java Enterprise Application
Server. Wow Glassfish rolls off the tongue easier than SJEAS.
So next I tried installing the OpenPortal that the Sun Portal team has come up with.
OpenPortal is an open source offshot of the Sun Java Enterprise System Portal Server.
Hmmm. It would seem the Sun marketing team will have a new challenge with all these
names circulating. But I digress. The OpenPortal was great. It does not have the complex
functionality of its big brother but as far a developer or small portal it is great. No roles
or personalization. You either got portlets or not. One thing, the login is integrated with
the security (admin-role) in the Glassfish server. You can change that in one of the dot xml
files though.
Topping off the experience was installing the OpenPortal plugins into Netbeans. Now, I am
embarrassed to say this. But in my life, I have deployed but never developed portlets. This
was another great experience in writing portlets. No stress at all.
I would say that the next generation off open source applications are great. Now off to
OpenESB.
