the fest was a huge hit he is a peek a boo into the events of  libre 08

The events  kicked started with a talk on introduction to open source by
Mr.Shashi shekar one of the core members of the MyLUG (the group which got open source into mysore) . The talk gave the audience all that they wanted to know about the movement and answered their questions on why this movement is given so much importance.

.
The first day consisted of talks from Sun Microsystems. The first talk was on project cross bow delivered by Mr. Venu gopal iyer, a senior engineer at Sun Microsystems, US.The talk consisted on how to contribute to open solaris and about the virtualisation i.e about zones and containers in solaris and the networking problem taken care by crossbow team.

The talk was followed by a session on sun studio compiler delivered by Anand b a CA of RVCE.This talk attracted a great amount of audience it spoke about the best compilers in the industry. The beauty of compilers and insights of how a process synchronization works.
The talks had around 90 attendees.
A workshop on creating web servers using xampp followed the the sun studio compilers it was conducted by Nakul Ganesh.S of obscura .the workshop was a tutorial on how to create web servers from scratch using the xampp tools the workshop ended with around 90 eager participants asking for xampp software to try it out at their homes.
The day ended with a data base session by Anand .It attracted all the data base enthusiasts . It was session on java db on how java can be used to manage databases instead of SQL it also provided information about thethe various databases systems around the world. Attracting around 80 participants.

Day 2 began with a workshop on mobile games creation conducted by Raghunandan .C.P and Kailash bysani of team Obscura .The workshop explained all the features of J2ME ,the mid lets and sprites and tildes followed by a demo using game builder. All the steps taken to build a game were displayed in the demo. The demo drew around 90 participants.
It was followed by three sessions in parallel a session that gave hands on Linux fundamentals and Linux debugging conducted by the SJCE LUG it gave the participants a feel of what a Linux distro looks like and how to do basic operations on linux and how to manage systems and how to debug in Linux. This session was conducted in the lab and had the lab overflown with participants we ran short of systems and live cds.
The other session in parallel was endorse it was a event to get the participants to fight against each other for endorsing a open source vs non-open source product.
The first and second day also had a desk event called plan and play conducted by Jayesh and ajay bharadwaj of obscura. The whole event was the brain child of jayesh they created a simple game in C and asked the participants to modify it to make it more better. The event had around 42 teams taking part one single most successful competition which proved that students will participate if there is quality in work.
The afternoon sessions of second day was exclusively reserved to foss speakers ( foss is the largest  organization in India and abroad which works and evangelizes open source).
The turn out for a Saturday afternoon was a great surprising. We had three sessions
The first session was all about KDE taken up by Mr. Kushal das a fedora ambassador and a active contributer to KDE .It spoke about how easy it was to contribute to KDE and what all can be done.
The next session was also taken by Mr.Kushal himself it was on a language that has been a back bone of many open source projects .He gave us a amazing introduction to python. The language simply attracted a whole lot of students into the hall or even outside to pester the speaker. The hall was completely filled for both the talks.
The third session was taken by Mr. Johnny jacob of novel and a gnome contributer. He spoke about how to make a career with open source obviously it had a great impact with he himself having made a career out of open source he was into novel because of his contribution. He spoke all about how to contribute, how to choose projects, where to land up for help and what all opportunities open source offers. It was inspirational for a lot of people to go out and start checking out all that he said.
At the end of the day that is the kind of satisfaction that makes us feel a success in terms of Libre.

The day began with sun spots talks that was delivered by Chinmayi.s.k of obscura. It gave insights of how sunspots can be used what all can be done. How it is programmed using Java and all the interfaces involved.
There were two demos as a part of this session. It was a brief introduction to Robotics programming.
It was followed by Cryptix and open source treasure hunt getting all the participants to literally sweat out and exhaust their brains.Cryptix was all about deciphering clues that were related to open source .
Next was the much anticipated Google Android Workshop, which was conducted by Arvind Saraf from Google. With over 300 people attending the workshop. It was the highlight of the complete fest.A complete introduction to programming in the Eclipse IDE and the Android SDK was given.

CRYPTIX OUR VIEW OUTSIDE.....INTO THE OPEN. Equip yourself with the terms associated with the open source and a brain which thinks logically and you are in for it. You dont need to answer the questions you just need to look through...we give you the answer look through it and there it lies a word related to the open source field in simple coded form...give us the words and you win it. Decode the answer given to you and present it in a more presentable form and you have the game on your side...

well a game that is sure to rake ur brains and teach you more.well this wonderful idea was presented by a obscura member vishwas sharma and by his friend shishir . this event will be held on the 3rd day . make sure u try it out .

libre means freedom. freedom to create , use and modify with out any body restricting. freedom is never granted but awareness is absolutely necessary if one has to use it. open source is to software what democracy is to a country or world. this movement has gained a huge momentum worldwide but unfortunately in lot of parts of the world there is no trace of its existence. we are a group called obscura based in mysore which is around 2hrs drive from Bangalore.we work on open solaris.we are also evangelists of the open source movement.during our interaction with our peers we observed a lack of awareness of open source or even if they knew lack of confidence to participate kept them away from this movement. We were thinking of a way to reach a large portion of this peer group through a smart effort that when we came up with the idea of conducting a fest where we hand picked certain technologies and give them enough knowledge and confidence to get them to contribute to these technologies there by giving birth to libre.
