the fest was a huge hit he is a peek a boo into the events of libre 08
The
events kicked started with a talk on introduction to open source by
Mr.Shashi shekar one of the core members of the
MyLUG (the group which got open source into mysore) .
The talk gave the audience all that they wanted to know about the movement and
answered their questions on why this movement is given so much importance.
.
The first day consisted of talks from Sun
Microsystems.The first talk was on project cross bow delivered by Mr. Venu
gopal iyer, a senior engineer at Sun Microsystems, US.The talk consisted on how
to contribute to open solaris and about the virtualisation i.e about zones and
containers in solaris and the networking problem taken care by crossbow team.
The talk was followed by a session on sun studio
compiler delivered by Anand b a CA of RVCE.This talk attracted a great amount
of audience it spoke about the best compilers in the industry.The beauty of
compilers and insights of how a process synchronization works.
The talks had around 90 attendees.
A workshop on creating web servers using xampp
followed the the sun studio compilers it was conducted by Nakul Ganesh.S of
obscura .the workshop was a tutorial on how to create web servers from scratch
using the xampp tools the workshop ended with around 90 eager participants
asking for xampp software to try it out at their homes.
The day ended with a data base session by Anand
.It attracted all the data base enthusiasts . It was session on java db on how
java can be used to manage databases instead of SQL it also provided
information about thethe various databases systems around the world. Attracting
around 80 participants.
Day 2 began with a workshop on mobile games
creation conducted by Raghunandan .C.P and Kailash bysani of team Obscura .The
workshop explained all the features of J2ME ,the mid lets and sprites and
tildes followed by a demo using game builder. All the steps taken to build a
game were displayed in the demo. The demo drew around 90 participants.
It was followed by three sessions in parallel a
session that gave hands on Linux fundamentals and Linux debugging conducted by
the SJCE LUG it gave the participants a feel of what a Linux distro looks like
and how to do basic operations on linux and how to manage systems and how to
debug in Linux.This session was conducted in the lab and had the lab overflown
with participants we ran short of systems and live cds.
The other session in parallel was endorse it was
a event to get the participants to fight against each other for endorsing a
open source vs non-open source product.
The first and second day also had a desk event
called plan and play conducted by Jayesh and ajay bharadwaj of obscura.The
whole event was the brain child of jayesh they created a simple game in C and
asked the participants to modify it to make it more better. The event had
around 42 teams taking part one single most successful competition which proved
that students will participate if there is quality in work.
The afternoon sessions of second day was
exclusively reserved to foss speakers ( foss is the largest organization in India and
abroad which works and evangelizes open source).
The turn out for a Saturday afternoon was a great
surprising.We had three sessions
The first session was all about KDE taken up by
Mr. Kushal das a fedora ambassador and a active contributer to KDE .It spoke
about how easy it was to contribute to KDE and what all can be done.
The next session was also taken by Mr.Kushal
himself it was on a language that has been a back bone of many open source
projects .He gave us a amazing introduction to python. The language simply
attracted a whole lot of students into the hall or even outside to pester the
speaker. The hall was completely filled for both the talks.
The third session was taken by Mr. Johnny jacob
of novel and a gnome contributer.He spoke about how to make a career with open
source obviously it had a great impact with he himself having made a career out
of open source he was into novel because of his contribution.He spoke all about
how to contribute, how to choose projects, where to land up for help and what
all opportunities open source offers. It was inspirational for a lot of people
to go out and start checking out all that he said.
At the end of the day that is the kind of
satisfaction that makes us feel a success in terms of Libre.
Day 3 was one of the most awaited days of the
fest we had two crowd pullers the talk on sunspots and the talk on google
android along with these were exciting competitions like cryptix,open source
treasure hunt and Linux quiz.
The day began with sun spots talks that was
delivered by Chinmayi.s.k of obscura. It gave insights of how sunspots can be
used what all can be done.How it is programmed using Java and all the
interfaces involved.
There were two demos as a part of this session.It
was a brief introduction to Robotics programming.
It was followed by Cryptix and open source
treasure hunt getting all the participants to literally sweat out and exhaust
their brains.Cryptix was all about deciphering clues that were related to open
source .
Next was the much anticipated Google Android
Workshop,which was conducted by Arvind Saraf from Google.With over 300 people
attending the workshop.It was the highlight of the complete fest.A complete
introduction to programming in the Eclipse IDE and the Android SDK was given.
Libre was a huge success with around 1200 people
attending the events of this fest.
