trying to make the world a better place

Friday Oct 05, 2007

I have been traveling for the last 3 years making the world a better place with solaris 10. I think i've done some really good work. I have been in cities in the 4 corners of the US. I haven't even been asked to go outside of the US(well i went to toronto once), but i have traveled just about every week since about 6 months before s10 launched. I am very tired. I love to hear what people are doing with solaris..

I am going to start trying to do things much more virtual. I have twin 6 year old boys and i need to be home at night for awhile. I am trying to think of away to get out and see people without traveling.

So how about telling me what you are doing?

I am also looking to starting a new opensolaris community called champions. It will be a place where sr. solaris can go to just ask questions.. What do people think?

If you have any other ideas to keep me home, i would love to hear them

Grueling, but ahhh so worth it

Friday Dec 15, 2006

A few weeks back i was offered a job. A great job... and i turned it down. I have to face the fact, i have drunk the solaris 10 kool-aid and there is no turning back. In the past 2 weeks i have had to face a family loaded with strep throat, unexpected company, being snowed in in chicago, 4 6 year old birthday parties and vain attempts to keep up with xmas chaos. AHH... but i still love it. Every minute of every day is a new challenge.

Last friday was the absolute best. My twin 5 year old boys had a christmas program. Days before the program my son jacob begged and pleaded to get his first suit for this show. He actually said he would give up xmas presents to get this suit. So we got him(and his twin brother) a black suit, white shirt, red tie with black shoe and socks to match... When we got to the show i had no idea my boys would be singing a duet of god bless america to close out the show.. It was so far my very proudest moment. I never wanted to be one of those people who said "that's my boys".. but i had no choice not to when they were done. It was the most beautiful thing i have seen in my entire life!!

I believe in N1

Friday Nov 17, 2006

So i just got done with a few days of training in chicago with my peers.. it was fantastic. I spend my time so heads down on solaris that i don't get to see what others are doing and by the end i was really really proud to be part of sun.

The big things are all the n1 software that works with zones and containers. I am finding that if someone over the age of 40 has more than like 3 zones on 3 different machines, it's hard to remember which one is which.. the solaris container manager does exactly what i want it to do. show me the zones and perf data for those zones.. great.. also had some time to look at the n1sm product for provisioning and cluster.. very cool tools to make life easier for admin's rather than the tools of the past which seemed to make things harder.

Without going into specifics.. the vision of n1 is almost here. the idea of n machines under 1 management structure..1 button click, well maybe 2 or 3, to roll out an entire data center..maybe a few more clicks but still pretty cool..

On hope

Tuesday Nov 07, 2006

Hope is a wonderful thing. It keeps the world turning. If I had no hope of a better future, I wouldn't wake up in the morning. I would just stay in bed until I died. I love hope! Outside of Minneapolis there is a town called Hope MN. When my husband and I drive by that sign we always say "Oh there's hope in one mile"

After 3 long years of singing the praises of Solaris 10 to anyone who will listen, I am having alot of hope that the message is catching on. I heard yesterday from a customer, that they had heard(blogging is nice for second and third hand information) that source code contributions to apache and tomcat now come mostly from people running solaris x86. Why is this hopeful? Developers can run anything and they are choosing Solaris

BTW I think the only person who reads this is my brother in law.. Hi Mike!.. I feel really privileged to have married into such a nice family.

it's alive..and i'm taking an act of faith ...

Monday Jun 26, 2006

I am giddy as a school girl. After several years of talking to people about zfs, it's now available. I can't even put into words how exciting it is...

As a celebration for this event.. and the 45 lbs i've lost on weight watchers, i am going to buy a new car, not just any car but the car of my dreams. My husbands car died on friday and in an act of faith that we as a company are back on track, this afternoon, i will get a fully loaded nissan murano. I should probably dream greater dreams, but i really love this car. I sat in one on saturday and my heart skipped a beat. I hadn't felt that way since my husband proposed to me(i'd like to say when my children were born, but i was so hopped up on some drug called perky something that i don't remember much) Now the only question is color. I can get the dark cranberry with tan leather, or gold with black. There is also a black with black, but i have spent the 6 years with a black minivan..

back to zfs .. i had a customer say to me, well your guys couldn't have thought up something like this on their own, they must have gotten it from somewhere, ahh but they did. Real innovation, real engineering comes from looking at the problems today and thinking up all on our own ways to get around those problems, and boy did they.

if you would like to take a look at my zfs deep dive feel free.

zfs

and if you have a vote on the color of my car, please leave a comment.

greatest ever

Friday Jun 09, 2006

I have had a little chance to reflect over the last 3 years. I have traveled all over the country, singing the praises of solaris 10. I have met primarily with system admininistrators from all over. I have met some amazingly creative people and some that were, let's say not so creative. I really feel exceptionally lucky for this road. My guess is i have met at minimum about 1000 new people in the last 3 years.

So we reorganize again. My goal for this year is meet some people from other countries. After 50 or so trips to chicago and cleveland, i'm hoping to get to some other places. My favorite part of being a solaris ambassador is being part of a world wide group. I am a small town midwestern girl and it never stops amazing me when i send a query to the ambassadors late at night and by morning the guys from germany or australia will have answered me. Funny how the other moms at my kids sporting events have no idea. I sometimes feel like i am living a double life. Daytime is filled with mystery and intrigue, and my nights are filled with kids and scooby-doo.

What a ride!

I'm back

Friday Jan 06, 2006

The last few months have been full of excitement... I lost my passwd to my blog and didn't even have the 5 minutes i needed to fetch it. Thank god for xmas break, and little bit of time to breath. I feel like i was everywhere the last few months. Never been a better time to be a sme, at sun, but I need to slow down abit. When i go that fast, things fly to edge of my plate and occasionally roll off. Me and my husband(kev) are going to have our own little biggest loser competition. If you have met me you know i have alot of big loser potential. Maybe i'll blog the losses. Monday is supposed to be the start date. I have 80 lbs to lose and kev has 50. I've always wondered if you lose weight does someone else find it?

i can't seem to blog

Wednesday Aug 10, 2005

So i haven't been doing a great job blogging.. July at sun is the day of rest.. I also found out i have to have a little minor surgery, but nothing that will stop me from singing the praises of solaris. So today at a bootcamp someone asked if the smf database was a single point of failure and if it were removed while the system was operational would the system panic. I was unsure so we tried.. removed it and the system just kept humming.. the ferrari will live to see another day

April 12th

Tuesday Apr 12, 2005

I haven't blogged in a few days and just thought i should. ... We had a great day in minneapolis and lots of great questions.. not that many i can answer right now. I have been talking about for sometime my friend putting the zonepath on an nfs server, and never tried it myself. I really should know better. That isn't currently an option with zones nor do i think i can convince anyone to make it so, but that won't stop me from trying...I'm off on a secret mission to secret places in omaha ... It will be fun to do a bootcamp on a military base. I wonder if they will laugh when i ask them to "GET DOWN AND GIVE 20"

Test Drive

Friday Apr 01, 2005

I have been continuing my journey of bringing the glad tidings of solaris 10..Today I was able to stay in minneapolis which is always a treat. For those who know me know i have by and large the most beautiful 4 year old twin boys. They are the joy and the love of my life. I have been joking lately that it's good a thing i'm not in marketing because my new marketing line is ... " solaris 10 is so good it makes mothers leave their children.... So i had a group of about 10 on a deep dive test drive today and had a couple questions i couldn't answer but will try to answer and post on monday. It is late on friday right now and i am watching my boys watch tom and jerry.. Have you ever wondered why cartoon characters have such easy access to dynamite?.. i digress For those of you in the class today you can get the slides at http://mediacast.sun.com ... I was also able to upload Jim's d-scripts which alot of people have been asking for..
