The Moment of Truth

"Simplicity is the Hallmark of Genius"

                      -- Albert Einstein

ZFS is Ingenious!

ZFS is Simple!

I have never been a fan of using format, partitioning, remembering the disk slice names...etc. Like everyone else, when I first tried out ZFS, I created a pool with a couple of disks:

       # zpool create mypool c1t1d0 c1t2d0

WOA-LA, that is it! All 2 disks are ready to use! ZFS automatically takes care of the complicated storage administration for me. How cool is that! I just love it. Better yet, the more I learn about ZFS, the more I see the beauty of its architecture. The pooled storage, copy-on-write transactions, consistent disk state, data integrity, self healing data, endian-neutral, simple administration...etc. ZFS is a collection of greatness.

My first assignment after join the ZFS team is to be a frontline engineer supporting the beta program. We tried to keep the number of beta customers small so that we can have closer relationship, however, that was not to be. We started the Beta program in a very limited fashion. We started working with the Solaris 10 Platinum customers only. Once we validated our support model and processes we then opened up the Beta program to all of Sun's customers. The demand is so strong that the number of beta sites grew 5 times in what felt like a few days. The requests are still coming in, however we are not taking more customers for the time being. We will continue supporting the beta program until ZFS is officially released and supported.

Some customers that I have personal contact with are very excited about ZFS. Lots of comments we received from the beta sites have been centered around how easy it is to use ZFS.

One of the beta customers said:

"Our current dominent product for storage management is Veritas Volume Manager.
It took me years to become proficient in the use of that product. It took me
two days to get to the same level of functionality with ZFS."

and a few others:

"I like the simplicity of the product."

"...growing a filesystem is so much simplier (and less dangerous)..."

"It's so simple, all works fine."

"I certainly will recommend ZFS based on: cost, improved disk space utilization, easy to use, simplified disk/FS management."

"ZFS is simple to use"

"I like the ease of administration. That's an aspect that really does work as advertised."

"For me and my Server-Farm, ZFS is one of the most exciting features of Solaris 10!"

"this will be the best FS for some times."

...

As far as for me, I only have 11 words to say :-) :

I Love ZFS!

ZFS is the Best File System on Earth!
