foot My "Why is this necessary" blog feature has been called out as a favorite by one my favorite bloggers, so I was inspired to be on the look out for content. As it turns out, finding content for this category is rather simple, but the Rainman-with-a-camera moment required for snapping an accompanying photo in the name of the blog can be a bit awkward.

Anyway, the stinky feet on airplanes issue has been brought up before, but it's usually men who are most likely to commit this smelly behavior. Not this time -- while commuting back to Colorado, a female college athlete wearing dress shoes with no socks (sitting next to me, of course) decided to liberate her stench emitting feet.

I wondered if there was a non-offending way to queue her to put her shoes on. All I came up with was "Do you smell that? I hope they aren't serving spoiled pickles on this flight, because I'm allergic to them."

In the name of tolerance, I settled with pointing my vent at her feet.
Comments:

Hrmpf, you think that's bad? Come by the Apple Cupertino campus sometimes. There are a half-dozen or more people who come to work without any shoes/socks at all. Yes, these people walk in the parking lot, in the halls, in the offices, and even in the *restrooms* without any shoes at all. As if that wasn't bad enough, they enjoy going to restaurants at lunch time without any shoes/socks either!

I'm usually rather less polite I'm afraid! A firm 'would you mind putting your shoes back on as your feet smell' has done the trick in the past.

Wouldn't pointing the vent at them just blow the smell around even more...?

Dear 193.203.136.215, You have a good point, but my theory was the vent redirection would blow the stench away from me. It seemed to work. Wouldn't it be great if you could optionally have your oxygen bag drop in situations like this?

I feel bad for the guy sitting in the seat in front of you. :) I would just say something. "Please put your shoes back on." "Please ask your child to stop kicking my child." Using "Please" makes it polite, right?

I think there *might* be polite ways of telling someone they smell, but I can't image how even the most polite phrasing wouldn't be offending. The stench would have to be seriously unbearable and occur for a really long time before I'd say something (the above offender came close to hitting my threshold).

Oh totally unnecessary!!! And once again congrats Linda on having the guts to snap pictures like this. It seems to me that if my neighbor on the plane was surreptitiously snapping photos of my bare feet, I'd get the hint and put my shoes back on...
