StarOffice 9 with Mac OS X Support Released Today
Pretty cool news that StarOffice now runs on Mac OS X (in addition to Solaris, Windows, and Linux).
"With the new features in 9.0, businesses get an open standards-based, enterprise-class office productivity suite that is compatible with Microsoft Office but costs significantly less. With its ability to read MS Office Open XML files, support for MS Access 2007 .accdb files and improved VBA macro support, StarOffice 9 is a great option for companies looking to reduce their IT costs in these tough economic times." ~Jim Parkinson, Vice President, Developer, Tools and Services at Sun
Download it here for $34.95 (enterprise volume pricing starts at $25/user).
Congrats to the StarOffice team!

Do you know if there will be a free download for education like there was for StarOffice 8?

Hi William. I don't know, but I'm working on getting you an answer.

William, per the StarOffice team, there won't be a free education download for StarOffice 9. Users in education are encouraged to download OpenOffice.org 3: http://www.openoffice.org/
Malte has a good blog post that summarizes the differences between StarOffice 9 and OpenOffice.org 3, but basically, it boils down to StarOffice 9 including support and indemnification. See: http://blogs.sun.com/malte/entry/staroffice_9_arrived
Hope this helps & apologies for the duplicate comment notification emails if you received them (my mistake).

Hi Linda, thanks for the response. So if I'm understanding correctly, there are fewer differences between SO9 and OO3 than there are between SO8 and OO2? For instance, SO8 includes more templates and clipart and I think it may have had some other minor features that were missing in OO2 as well. Am I correct in saying that OO3 either has all of the SO9 features or can get them through free extensions? If so, could you point me to the relevant links? I can't seem to find an extension for clipart (I did see a reasonably good one for Impress templates).

We have been using staroffice since 6.0 at a now closed down High School in Malmo, Sweden.
The teachers from that school have opened a private High school and will miss Staroffice as we will be using Openoffice now.
THANKS for the past years of a great product !
