I just heard the super sad news that Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter, was killed by a Stingray while filming 'Oceans Deadliest'. Per a USAToday article he swam over a stingray in Batt Reef and the stingray's barb pierced his heart.

Stingrays appear to be such gentle tranquil creatures. I've swam with them in the wild -- I'm holding one in the picture in my blog header with my daughter on my back -- Steve's death is a good reminder that while close encounters with wildlife is amazing, it's not to be taken lightly.

I remember the first time watching one of his shows and thinking what a lunatic he was, but I grew fond of him because of his love for protecting wildlife that wasn't so easy to love.

My girls all at one time or another loved the video he did with Wiggles. What a freak accident, I can't believe it. I Feel really bad for his wife and kids.

I have also swam with stingrays - off of Grand Cayman. It seems like such a freak accident. I wonder if the "swim with the stingrays" excursions will become less popular. My heart goes out to his wife and two kids... even though I still haven't gotten over seeing Steve dangle his infant child near a crocodile.

I can only imagine how wildly popular the stingray excursions will become now...tho' I'll think twice before I approach them closely again.

The infant dangling thing was surprising to me too. He broke the #1 law of nature that he talked so much about -- you don't @#$% around with a mother's baby. She must have been livid with him.

At any rate, I can't imagine how delighted Steve must have been with the manner of his death. It'd be shame to see him die any other way.
