Throughout the expo there have been various demos by new start ups. A few of my favorites:

Potenco: Creators of a portable human-powered power generator. Think Gilligan peddling furiously on a bamboo stationary bike created by the professor. The only difference is Potenco's product is more like a yoyo and far more efficient. After a minute of pulling on the string, enough power is generated to charge a cell phone for 25 mins of talk time or power an LED light for an hour of lighting. Great product for areas of the world with limited or no power -- such as poor regions with cell connectivity, but no power OR the Moscone center with thousands of laptop/cell toting electronic addicts stalking too few power outlets. ;-)

Tellme: Similar to calling 4-1-1 for information, only Tellme information requests via your cell phone are free by calling 1-800-555-TELLME, texting TELLM (83556), or by downloading/using Tellme beta (a J2ME application) on your cell phone.

Spock: I'm looking forward to receiving my beta account for this one. The demo was favorited by expo attendees via an American-Idol-like voting process of texting in votes for your favorite demo. Basically, Spock is a people-focused search engine that enables users to search for people and drill down on specific characteristics about them and see the commonality they share with other people. The results are based on data/tags from social networking sites and allows readers to vote on the relevancy of characterists assigned to people. The idea is the search results will be refined over time as more data becomes available and more people use it.

tellme sounds like just google SMS service, no?

Similar, but in addition to calling in your info request or using an app you install on your cell, Tellme allows you to text your request and within a second or two they text back the info you are seeking. With Goog411, you CALL in your request to an 800# and during that call you can request they text the info back to you by screaming "Text Message" at just the right moment. Perhaps, there is a Goog411 text in request feature, but I'm not aware of it.

Try tellme by texting "bookstore 94025" (business type and zip or you can do business type and city, state) to TELLM or 83556.

PS...you can also request info by business name, of course.

Did you say bamboo bike? Gilligan would have to cough up his life savings of sea shells for this one.
