I like James Governor's blog post today:
"...You can’t chain your colleagues, partners or customers to you. You can only help them love what they are doing, and when people feel like that you’re in good shape.

At RedMonk we fundamentally believe in lower barriers and open networks. No contract will cause people to do fantastic work. Only love works that way."
I left the following comment on his blog entry (typo and all) -- I should have just posted it here and left a trackback, but I was eager to comment. :-)

"Amen to that! It’s why I stay at Sun — I work on projects that I’ve chosen/love, my boss stays out of my way, I work with some of the brightest engineers on the planet, and the working from home thing has enabled me to continue with my workaholic shedule while having more time to spend with my family/pets/garden because of the lack of commute time."
Comments:

Whole-heartedy agree with your sentiment about Sun. It is really important to me to be treated like an adult and given leeway to explore and learn. Also, WFH not only saves time on commute, but dressing or showering.

Its debatable. Lew Tucker moved from Sun to salesforce and now working for Radar Networks as CTO. I doubt if he was not happy in either of his past places. "To love what you do" is sometimes a poison pill given by the managers to escape provide what their "subjects" really need. Sun and beyond the story is same.

Pam, I was going to mention the time saved w/ not focusing on personal appearance as much, but recently decided I should mention that benefit sparingly. ;-)

Ashish, maybe it's different for me, but the only person who defines my happiness is me and I stand by my comment that as far as job situations go, I really am rather satisfied per the reasons cited in this blog entry. One the other hand, there is no job-topia -- there are times when different challenges arise, but that's life, right?

May be my comment did not come right. I violated a few rules. I should not have named any person as how would I know about his/her personal challenges? Second, its not just keeping happy its also about what your values are and how well the management keeps it.
