wikis.sun.com beta is L-I-V-E!!!

Congrats to the extended wikis.sun.com team, the folks who participated in the wikis pilot, and our friends at Atlassian!

The content is readable by anyone with a browser and writable by Sun employees and invited guests with a Sun Online Account.

We plan to refine the site throughout the beta phase (& beyond), but in the meantime, let us know what you think and...

...go collaborate!!! :-)

A number of reasons, but basically, we chose Confluence because if it's wiki spaces functionality, the ability to cluster, it's extensibility, Java-based, and Atlassian's support model.

Congratulations Linda and Team! Hey, one question on your post...could you "elaborate" on "invited" guests? I'm Sun...but how would a non-Sun person get "invited"...would they politely ask you? Would they complete a Survivor-esque challenge? Would they swim with sharks (discovery channel shark week...sorry for weird reference)? Would they stand around in a velvet-rope line in their best clothes and look all swanky and wait for a bouncer to choose them from the crowd?

Great to see this. We also use Confluence as intranet wiki on Sun Web Server 7.0 and with Sun Directory Server. You've built a very nice theme in Sun design. Would you like to make the "Sun Confluence theme" open source?

Thorleif, other than the Sun header/footer, the theme is the standard out of the box Confluence theme.

@igor: it works and millions of people are familiar with it. Also, all the knowledge base is in one namespace (per language, granted). No fragmentation of "spaces". We're dealing with that at our company because twiki allowed for different "wikis" and now the cross-space linking is harder than it should be. "Spaces" encourages siloism.

@Christopher: IMO spaces are great, when used right they makes life for readers as well as for content creators much easier. I've seen too many wikis that turned into unmanageable spaghetti like data (not information) clusters. Spaces bring order and a bit of structure into the wiki madness :) You are right that there is a potential for information fragmentation and repetition, but isn't that the same issue that a wiki with one namespace that contains 100k pages and you can't figure out what is where have?

@Christopher: I don't think spaces encourage siloism but rather agree with Igor that they help keeping the information in a certain context, which makes it easier to find content.

Linking to pages in different spaces is very simple with the link inserter, and even using plain markup I can't see how it could be any easier to link content. And if you want to have the content appear on the same page instead of linking to it, you can do so using the Include Page macro[1].

However, kudos to the wikis.sun.com team. Confluence is very well integrated with the Sun CI and I'm very excited about the move.
