China again I am just attending the 6th OpenOffice.org conference in Beijing. It's more more than a year ago that I visited RedFlag 2000 to teach them different things from OOo architecture, and some things in Beijing changed meanwhile, mostly because of the Olympic games. There are many more subway lines, and the new ones are really modern. Interesting that you have to put your luggage into some X-Ray machine when you enter the train system. I guess they started it for Olympics games, and didn't give up afterwards. I have the feeling that the traffic situation has improved. People are still driving like crazy, and as a pedestrian you better be very careful, but it seems there are less cars – people probably prefer the train now, which is fast and really cheap (~ EUR 0,25 for a one way ticket, distance doesn't matter). I will stay here until the week end, because we will have some guided tourists tours then. I have seen most places on my last trip, but: Last time I was here on my own. This time, I am here with 35 colleagues! This will be fun, and I tend to compare it with a “school trip”. More to come...

Hi Malte,
I was planning to attend the 6th OOoCon at Beijing but had to cancel my trip (& paid $150 penalty for canceling my flight) at the last moment due to illness.
I am wondering whether you could ask participants from Sun why so little attention was paid to the Solaris version of OpenOffice.org, not much more than the obligatory service?
For example, did anyone know why we are having problems installing OOo 3.0 in OpenSolaris (though there is a workaround)?
But the most serious issue is the font display problem in the Solaris version of OpenOffice. Before this problem is solved, we should, for the sake of saving Sun's reputation, refrain from promoting OpenSolaris in China. An operating system whose version of wordprocessor cannot display the names of China's current and future leaders has no place in China. This is a truism which doesn't need to be elaborated.
If you are interested in knowing more about this Chinese font display issue, please talk to either Harry Fu or Yong Sun of Sun's Beijing team who are expected to attend the OOoCon. However, since everyone (especially those from Sun) seems to avoid this problem like a plague, I won't feel bad if you ignore this comment. :-)

Hi Wayne,
thanks for pointing me to this.
I didn't meet Sun Beijing people here until now, but I will get the details from them somehow and bring it to the attention of the responsible developers......
Malte.
