Here is another view of earlier LA fires in October 2007. While not quite as visually catching as the pictures yesterday, these were also generated from NASA's MODIS satellite and represent hazardous ground level ozone concentrations.

more information on this study conducted by the MODIS science team can be found on the link above. Supercomputers like Ranger, the Sun Constellation System supercomputer at TACC are used to process satellite sensor data and additional data models to produce these images.
