Here is a great article by Info World's Tom Yager. My favorite quote:

So what's an OS X nut to do when he can't tap the Mac's active and welcoming community, sumptuous documentation, gratis dev tools, out-of-the-box richness, and massive library of free and affordable software wherever he needs it? I recently found the answer: Run Solaris.

What Tom was talking about was the latest Solaris Express Developer Edition. You can download or order a free DVD of SXDE which features:

  • A brand new, easier to use, graphical installer
  • D-Light, a new DTrace GUI tool, extending the power of DTrace to a broader developer audience
  • Many enhancements not yet in Solaris 10 including the latest wireless drivers, greater USB plug and play, StarOffice 8, and a host of other desktop improvements.
  • The latest developer tools including Sun Studio 12, NetBeans 5.5, Java Platform, Standard Edition 6, D-Light, and others automatically installed when the OS is installed.
  • New support options available at no extra cost to customer who have or purchase a Solaris 10 Support Subscription

And unlike OS X, you can run Solaris not only on Intel based x86 servers, but also AMD servers from Sun, IBM, Dell, HP, and others, as well as UltraSPARC servers including our new 8-core, 64-thread Niagara 2 based servers.
