Phew! I arrived in California after a 18 hour flight.

Being 189cm tall doesn't give you much leg room. Sitting still for that long isn't fun. Luckily I had my laptop, running Solaris 10, so I could hack away on my pet projects and clean up my inbox.

Time to head out and get some dinner before I crash...

The Home Espresso FAQ
Permalink | Comments [3] | 2004-09-07 09:20

After almost a week as proud espresso maker owner, I have now consumed more cups of delicious espresso than I had before my 35th birthday. I'll have to cut down my consumption to 5 cups a day soon, I feel like a hummingbird...

Alec sent me the ultimate link for an espresso newbie: The Home Espresso FAQ. He also gave me some good advice on grinders. So far I've been buying freshly ground coffee, but I understand that to get the best result I need to buy my own grinder.

DOM is a memory hog
Permalink | Comments [1] | 2004-09-03 10:41

I've been lazy and used a javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilder to get a DOM (Document Object Model) of the audit trail, and it turns out to be a real memory hog. Loading 17991 audit records (XML file was 7.7 MB) results in a Java VM of 304 MB (where 194 MB is the resident size of the process).

Not good!

I have audit trails millions of audit records.

This means that I'll probably have to use a SAX parser to parse the audit file.

Turning 35
Permalink | Comments [1] | 2004-09-02 01:56

Oh dear! So this is how it feels to be "middle aged". Well, is it not that different, but I'm having harder and harder to sleep-in in the mornings. That's a bad sign! Other than that I think I've managed to reach this age without any major midlife-crisis.

I got an Innova Dream from my loving family, along with some nice stainless steel cups. I'll test drive it at lunch...

I was tempted to get one of the brightly colored ones, but I think it would stand out too much in the kitchen. I will have to buy a coffee grinder though. Apparently it is very important to get the beans finely grinded for this espresso machine.
