It is working!
Permalink | | 2006-08-31 11:12

Two minutes after I posted "Problem transfering a phonecall to my HBH-DS970" I managed to get it rolling as expected.

Here's what I did:

  • I deleted the HBH-DS970 from the list of BlueTooth devices
  • Then I bonded them again (by setting the the little switch on the headset to the left and pressing the power button for about 5 seconds after it had powered on
  • Now I move the switch over to the right

Now I can listen to music and when I have an incomming call, I get a short "beep", and I just press the mic button to answer. Then the music pauses, and resumes when I hang up.

Problem transfering a phonecall to my HBH-DS970
Permalink | | 2006-08-31 11:01

I've been pulling my hair while trying to transfer phone calls to my HBH-DS970 headset. It neither works when I have an ongoing call and select "Transfer sound", nor when someone is calling and I press the small phone button on the HBH-DS970 (where the mic is). I have no problem listening to music in them though!

When I select "Transfer sound" and select the headset, I get the message "Cannot connect to HBH-DS9701". In the "Call settings" I've selected "Always route answered calls to Bluetooth".

When I try to answer the phone, I get a serie of short "tut-tut"s in the headset, and finally it closes down the connection to the headset.

Bugging Apple about P990 support in iSync

If you have a P990 and would like support for it in iSync, you should go to the iSync feedback page and submit an enhancement request.

Do you use a SecurityManager?
Permalink | Comments [1] | 2006-08-31 06:51

A recent thread at TheServerSide.com discussed the use of a SecurityManager. Most people seem to be running without a SecurityManager, so I'd like to post an open question to the audience: do you use a SecurityManager, and if not, why? We'd like to know what we can do to make it easier/better?

Summing up the thread, some have two main reasons for not using a SecurityManager:

  • Configuring permissions is difficult
  • Turning on security affects performance

While others have use a SecurityManager because of:

  • SecurityManagers (in EE) are often used just to enforce certain programming paradigms that are not necessarily security-specific (EJB's should not write to the file system, servlets should not spawn threads)
  • SecurityManagers are especially needed if you're running untrusted code
  • Even if you're only running trusted code, SecurityManagers can still be useful in preventing vulnerabilities caused by buggy software

I'll try to measure the performance impact of enabling a SecurityManager in Glassfish and post the results so we can start to look at improving the performance.

Manually keeping iCal in sync with your P990
Permalink | | 2006-08-25 16:41

I've been toying with ways to keep my P990 in sync with with iCal, and so far I've only come up with doing all changes on my P990 and sending the it to my Mac over BlueTooth.

The reason you can't send calendar events to the P990 is that the P990 uses vCalendar version 1 while iCal uses version 2.

P990 & iSync workaround for Address Book
Permalink | Comments [2] | 2006-08-22 14:00

Here's a crude workaround you can use for Address Book. It is doable for a couple of entries, but not for my 400+ addresses!

In Address Book:

  • Select a vCard
  • Choose "Send This Card..." from the "Card" menu
  • Pick your P990 from the list of BlueTooth devices

When you get "Beam received" in your P990:

  • Choose "Save"
  • Open "Messaging" and you should have a new entry in your inbox
  • View the new message
  • Choose "Save"
  • And finally you can delete the message

You'll now have the vCard in "Contacts" on the P990. If you update the vCard on your P990, it is easier to send the vCard back to your Mac. Just select the card, choose "Send as" in the menu and pick your Mac. Now you get prompted "Incomming file transfer", and then that the card is a duplicate. Unless you are sure that you want the vCard updated, you can select "View" to see the updated vCard.

Note that you can send multiple vCards from the P990 to your Mac, this makes it easier to keep Address Book updated.

Latest news on the P990 and iSync
Permalink | | 2006-08-22 13:30

For the last days I've been hacking iSync and reading up on the subject, and come to the conclution that since the phone is using Symbian 9.1 and UIQ 3.0 the sync agent will need to be updated.

This is not doable by hacking a PhonePlugin, where you can add support for a phone similar to one already supported by Apple, and the P990 does not fall in that category. That is life on the bleeding edge...

In Mac OS X 10.5 iSync is updated, but the developer preview still does not work with the P990. This means that we'll have to wait for the next Mac OS X update for support.

A very handy addition to Mail.app
Permalink | | 2006-08-20 03:22

A couple of days ago I started to use the MailTags extension to Mail.app, and it has made my life a lot easier!

It allows me to put emails into projects, add keywords to them and associate them with iCal TODOs. Very handy when you're trying to juggle a bunch of projects at the same time, and get tons of email every day. I only get about 300 every day, and MailTags make it so much easier to sift through them quickly.

Mulberry is back!

After dissapearing from the market a while ago Mulberry has now reappeared in a free community edition.

I won't change back, as I've gotten used to the features of Mail.app and its integration into Mac OS X.

More on the P990 and iSync
Permalink | Comments [2] | 2006-08-19 02:01

I wanted to know what the deal was with the P990 whitepaper which states that the P990 is supported by iSync, so I wrote an email to the SonyEricsson call center and got the following reply:

From: questions.se@support.sonyericsson.com
Subject: Case : 70300095
Date: saturday 19 aug 2006 10.21.14 GMT+02:00
To: Martin Englund

Dear Mr. Englund,

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Call Center.

Unfortunately the information in WhitePaper for P990i is incorrect.
However, support for P990i will most likely be implemented in upcoming versions
of iSync. For more information regarding this case please contact Apple.

Best regards,
/Dennis
Sony Ericsson Call Center

Maybe they should update that whitepaper then! I bought the P990 since I was told it could sync with Mac OS X, and now have a very expensive paperweight. Ok, perhaps not just a paperweight, but it is very frustrating to have "smartphone" which you can't synchronize with your computer!

Sun's GC is blogging
Permalink | | 2006-08-18 01:53

I just noticed that Sun's GC == General Counsel, for those who aren't used to corporate acronymns, blogs. Cool! It'll be interesting to get a glimpse of what a GC does during a day. You can read his blog here.

First problem encountered
Permalink | | 2006-08-15 08:31

It didn't take that long to find the first problem, but technically it isn't the P990i, it is iSync in Mac OS X which gives me grief.

The P990i whitepaper states on page 45 that it is supported by iSync, but on the supported devices page it is missing, and when I scan for devices it shows up as not supported! Bummer!

My guess is that it will be supported, but I don't feel like waiting...

Playing with my new P990i
Permalink | | 2006-08-15 08:17

I just opened the box of my brand new SonyEricsson P990i and am now trying out all the new features...

So far I haven't found anything I dislike with the phone, and now that I finally can use my HBH-DS970 headset I'm happy as a clam!

I am currently listening to The Cardigans Gran Turismo and the quality is better than I expected.

Beta Update of Parallels Desktop for Mac
Permalink | | 2006-08-08 10:34

I just saw that they released the beta update of Parallels desktop for Mac OS X. It contains a fix for a problem I found very annoying. You can't connect a second disk in Solaris.

I want to keep my Solaris workspaces on a separate disk (and separate on Mac OS X too), so I don't blow all my work out of the water when I upgade to the next release of Nevada, and now I can finally do it.
