Cloning Mercurial repositories using "zfs clone"
Permalink | Comments [1] | 2006-09-15 21:14

An old blog entry by Darren about how he used ZFS to make fast TeamWare bringovers got me thinking that I should be able to do the same for Mercurial.

So instead of documenting yesterdays Glassfish experiment, I started playing with ZFS. It didn't take me many minutes until I had a working script that mimic'd a hg clone /path/to/repository. This cut down the clone time for JDK 7 from four minutes down to one second!

Now I'm putting it into a Mercurial extension which I hope to make available here later on.

Please share, this is really cool. I had wanted to do the same thing. Does making it an extension mean that I can still run 'hg clone' but underneath it uses ZFS clone ? If so very cool.
