(I got clued in to this one thanks to Dr. Chhandomay Mandal of Reviews Interactive fame)
The target demographic (as we like to say in the biz) for this one is students. So if you can type as fast w/your thumbs on a phone as you type w/your fingers on a keyboard, you're a good candidate for this one.
:-)
It's all about OpenSolaris and Netbeans.
We want to know what you think. And thoughtful, useful reviews can win up to $250 in Visa Debit cards!
Here's what you've got to do to play (along):
1. Download
OpenSolaris 2008.5 OS and/or NetBeans IDE 6.1.
2. Test the product and post a review!
3. Submit the URL of the review.
4. Do it before June 6, 2008.
My new favorite blogger, Andreas Ebbert Karroum, published a great blog entry for keeping your finger on the pulse of JavaOne if you don't happen to be in San Francisco this week. If you'll induldge a little copy/paste action:
I’m in the unfortunate situation to actually have a full conference pass for JavaOne 2008 in San Francisco, complimentary of Sun for their Star Spec Leads - thanks Liz
for all your support over the years, without actually being there (for
various reasons). So how can you follow the conference as close as
possible, without actually being there?
Reading Blogs - this is a recommendation of blogs to follow to keep up with what’s going on at JavaOne.
Webcasts - I wish they would also cast some
selected sessions, maybe even only for those with a ticket. (I should
propose that to Sun, to sell “virtual tickets” that only entitle you to
follow the conference remotely)
If you have any other suggestions, please comment, I love to hear about them!
Update:
@JavaOne2008 suggested to include the possibility to join JavaOne on Second Life.
I’ve not included it in this blog previously because I’m not using
Second Life, but if you are, this might be a good chance to take part.
Great write-up, Andreas! Thank you for pulling this together!
In short, there are lots and lots of important, substantive things to tell you about today.
(Which I will do as soon as I get a minute to sit down and blog)
Meanwhile, a trivial, frivolous story...
So this past weekend.... I'm at the elementary school spring fair on Saturday. Volunteer duty. My time-slot was at the end of the day, which included clean-up. So I'm one of the last people to leave...
This kid comes walking around... He's handing out hot dogs. He says the kitchen staff told him he had to give the hot dogs away. "Take one," he says. So, I'm not really a big elementary school cafeteria hot dog eater (I know you can't imagine why :-) I pass.
A few minutes later, this kid comes around again. He's still loaded down with hot dogs. And a bit irritated. "Please, lady. Would you just take a hot dog?" Clearly, the pressure of having to unload the dogs was getting to him. So I take a hot dog.
I put it in my purse.
I figure one of my kids will eat it when I get home.
One of my fellow-mommy-gal-pals is there and she tells me not to forget it in my pursue.
Fast-forward to Sunday morning... I'm in church... they pass the tray... I unzip my purse so that I can get out my wallet for some money...
Let's put it this way, I smelled it before I saw it.
(and so did everybody else sitting around me.)
I just quick zipped my purse shut and took on that same quizzical, slightly embarrassed look everyone else around me had on their face about where that ripe hot dog smell was coming from.
There's a moral in that story somewhere, I think...

We have more than 30,000 employees in 100 countries.
We all live on the network.
And today we got to interact with each other in an environment enabled by it -- Second Life.
Sun hosted a global townhall for its employees in Second Life. A heavy-hitting line-up of execs came in world to talk to and interact with our employees there, including CEO Jonathan Schwartz...

In a word: Fawesome.
HUGE big time propos go to Fiona Gallagher, who's lead on Sun's presence in Second Life.
It was an incredible experience, and one that I am humbled to have had the opportunity to engage in.
In that time (and also in a previous life) I had the opportunity to work with Shannon Raybold, a Webby award winner who is a net gen hot shot in the non-profit circles. She works for the United Nations Foundation.
It's an interactive game that allows the user to deliver mosquito nets to people who need them. If you play the game before April 25 - World Malaria Day - a mosquito net will be sent to Africa on the user's behalf.
There are so many things that I love about this... using the network to fuel momentum for the work; creating rich, interactive user experiences; using the experience to underscore the message... you know I'm bursting to go on and on but I'm super pressed for time today.
The take-away (as we like to say in the biz): you should check this out.
If speeds and feeds are to you what M&Ms and Bon Bons are to me, heres a little cut-and-past action for you...
The industry's first dual-socket CMT systems based on the
third-generation UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor set a new bar for
performance, efficiency and economics in scaling web, enterprise, HPC
and virtualization infrastructures. The new systems will enable you to
dramatically increase the output of your applications at a fraction of
the cost, in significantly less space and using much less energy for
the same compute density than comparable x86 systems -- enabling you to
design more innovative web services and products, achieve faster
time-to-market, and make better business decisions.
There's a live chat at 9 a.m. US Pacific with the hot shot techno celebs, and some action going on in Sun's Pavillion in Second LIfe.
So when my friends at church find out that I'm on twitter I get the same look that I got from them when they found out all those years ago that I started blogging.
It's this cross between facination, befuddlement and anxiety.
I can see them thinking, wondering whether there's something slightly suspicious about the whole thing.
So when it comes to the "mainstream," we've still got a long way to go.

But if I got to work for Sun Microsystems only one day per year, I'd want to choose April 1.
A sampling of April 1st from years past....
Sun Founder (and one of the smartest people on the earth to draw air from the same atomsphere that sustains me) Bill Joy's brand new Ferarri in the middle of a pond.
But the real fun seems to happen inside.....
